Good grief, SVDB on ebay in PCGS 63BN just cleared 2K

Not my coin, I dont know the seller or owner: Link

Geez.... You could have had them 4 months ago for $1450ish. Now that's some growth.

I think that one has upgrade potential if it looks that good in hand ,even if it's only to 63RB.

Risky though, could go 62 bn also, you have to be a lucky submitter to pay that much-------------BigEimage

Here is the obverse...I've posted common Lincolns with similar color and condition and some forum members commented that there was "rub" on the cheekbone and/or jaw.

So is that "rub" I see on the jaw/ cheekbone? To me, that coin is every bit a 63RB...or is it a slider?image

Not many people have been hurt in the coin market, up or down, in buying the keys.

That coin might have changed hands a few times before being pulled from circulation.

It is technically "uncirculated" if the fields are slightly darkened from a few people handling the coin.

There could be acceptable darkening of high points on the coin AS LONG AS there is no flattening in any area.

The photo is overexposed so it is difficult to really get a handle on what that coin looks like. Today's collectors are placing too much emphasis on the 1909-S VDB. It isn't rare, especially in that grade. Keep in mind that from the end of the great collector boom in 1964 until almost 2000, the 1909-S VDB languished. It could happen again.

When I started collecting coins in the 1960s, I thought the 09S VDB was not rare, as well overpriced. People were willing to pay quite a bit for them then, and 40 plus years later, this has not changed.
I never owned one, and I never will. For $2K, I'd much rather buy a cherry MS 66 Type Barber Quarter (or a nice Seated Quarter from the 1880s in 5) than this coin.

    "Sou Mangueira......."
  • I agree... an 1896-s or 1913-s barber quarter in a low grade with nice even toning and full rims would be my choice over a high end 09-s vdb. Or better yet a nice XF specimen of another key date.

It appears seller did a smart thing and put a high reserve on it and found 2 bidders who were interested in it enough to hit and exceed the reserve. Not sure this indicates what the market may be.

Many of the "available" keys have finally had their day after years of slow growth. I believe the next downturn will involve the price of many keys once thought to be immune from price drops. "Unavailable" keys like a 74cc dime or 60-s,72-s quarter, will continue to march on.

I'm guessing that someone thinks it might go 63RB. It's still got good eye appeal at any rate. Some people are actually willing to pay more than full retail list for a coin they oh so desperately want, dontchaknow! image

Well, I bought a DMPL Morgan PCGS for $600, no returns allowed and I was very disappointed.

I wish the buyer good luck. I would never recommend buying a coin with the terms of this sale, no paypal and
no returns allowed. I suspect the coin was photoshopped and made to look more red. I guess on a $2000 coin $20 for shipping is nothing.

I sold a VF35 yesterday wholesale for 1000$...they keep going up....and they are common as sin.
  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
Ah, but common with a buttload of collectors is different than common with few collectors...or even "not so" common with fewer collectors.

I would rather have the coin shown than a barber quarter as one mentioned....I don't like the series and that's the great thing here....we all have a choice image

Strong feedback, reliably slabbed -- the snipers will come through. I know it's a little unnerving to look like you're giving it away, but many of the strongest bids will likely come in the last 15 seconds.

[Edit to add: I know it feels like the PayPal fees would be hard to stomach, but you might very well get the fees back through more bids and stronger bids. Just something to think about. It's possible that will discourage some people from bidding.]

    Personally, I think that's a very nice coin for a 63BN.

Hey PCC, what IS up with your auction?

Which coin is someone bidding on?
The NGC with the alloy streaks on the obverse?
Or the PCGS coin without the alloy streaks?
  • PCC , is it the NGC , or the PCGS ??
