Please comment on and grade this bust half

Hey guys, I am considering buying this bust half for my type set. I have researched them and tried my best to learn how to grade them over the past month or so. It would help me out a lot to see what you guys think also.

Please comment on the surfaces, strike, and grade. Thanks!

Oh, also what price would you consider fair for this piece?

I'm with Jim on this one ... that's a nice looking EF coin from what I can tell ... probably very worthwhile if that's what you're looking for

  • I'd say it's an EF-40/45 and should fetch $150-$175.

I know strike is all over the place on this series as the mint allowed the use of dies that were past their time. I've been looking for one that does have a medium to strong strike. Did I get one?

I think that's an attractive one, around xf40 or so, and reasonably dark and dirty! image

  • xf-45 probably dipped should go 175 You can get a better example for a little more money

I think your coin has XF40 details. The dark discoloration at the bottom of the reverse is of some concern. You can better see what this is with coin in hand. Looking at the rest of the color on the coin, I wonder what happened in that area. Strike is usually good on 1829s.

Common 1829s looking about like yours, and encapsulated NGC/ANACS XF40, are worth up to $125. Raw ones, anywhere from $50 to $100. Stick to buying encapsulated coins, at least until you are very confident in what your are buying. I also recommend buying no less than solid XF40 in common Bust Half marriages.

Post your coin in this thread if you want more detailed information on the Overton marriage. Nobody has posted one like yours as of today.

Thank you for all the info! I guess my main question now, is the prices you quoted (BTW, others have quoted similar prices to me through PM.) When buying off eBay (my main source for buying coins,) I have not seen any decent-looking coins for anywhere near those prices. Any coin at that price is either not really an XF40, or it just plain looks ugly. Am I missing a better place to buy Bust Half coins?

By the way, I have not actually purchased the coin in the picture, yet. It has been listed (not currently) on eBay for a BIN of $185.

looks like natural steel gray tone....I would give it an ef 40...little bit to much rub from hair into eyebrow
