Why doesn't PCGS grade GSA's in the holder?

Anyone know why? I am curious whether it is a legal, quality control, or "biting" issue???

Thx in advance...

I always assumed it was a function of "quality control".

    What's a "biting" issue?

I think it might be because NGC did it first and they want to avoid the appearance of following suit.

    Andy.....

"Biting" is slang for copying, bogarting, mimicing...etc

  • They grade them. They just pop them out of those big ugly holders and attibute them to GSA in a PCGS holder.
  • Even though NGC grades GSA's in their original holders, I think PCGS should do the same. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who would want their GSA's graded by PCGS without having the coins removed from the original holder.

Because the GSA slabs don't fit in a PCGS blue box image

If they ever did, they wouldprobably also follow NGC's guarantee exclusion. If you look at the label on the NGC graded GSA dollars you will see that it states that the coin is NOT covered by the NGC grading guarantee. So if PCGS did the same you would probably find that they won't be covered by the PCGS guarantee.

Do you not think that it's because they really don't know for sure that it's the original coin that came in the holder?

    Might be....................

I think the GSA holder is just fine. Keeping these in the original holder with the box and paper is part of the "history thang" for me.
In fact, I think the coin in GSA holder w/box and paper is, or should be, worth a little more to the collector than just the coin itself.

Grade? I do-it-myself. TPG's don't know more than me about grading unc GSA dollars.

Those "ugly" holders demand some pricey premiums ! image

I disagree.... It's the date and condtion of the coin, not the holder, that demands the price. Please agree with me image

I agree 2S2C.... but... that is for people who are collectors, have taken the time to learn grading, are interested in coins, and are not just 'flippers'.... there is a real difference. Cheers, RickO

The original holders rightfully command some premium. The odds of a totally original coin go way, way up if a coin is in a GSA holder vs. a PCGS holder. There are so many dipped out, and artificially toned coins in top tier holders it isn't funny. Very few such coins are in GSA holders, partly because there is little profit in doing so, partly because it is not that easy to take the coin out and reseal the holder expertly or mess with them inside the holders. For collectors that want totally original coins in today's market, GSA holdered coins are one of the very few places to look and have high odds of finding them.

Doing so, even without a grade guarantee, makes them marginally more marketable. Authenticity is not a question. They have not been messed with. If people just would rely on their own grading skills, there would be no need for a third party opinion on them. Most are exceedingly common dates and grades anyway. It is not easy to assess proflikeness in the plastic (which is also part of the reason I believe crossover PLs don't make it a lot of the time). Maybe a case for the few attributable VAMs could be made. Hardly a reason to bother though. I like just having them and the occasional remnant Redfield Paramount slabs as is.
