Do you feel an obligation, as a numismatist, to circulate the new dollar coins?

Do you feel this obligation? I am doing my part in the following way-- I am the treasurer for the local chapter of an international charity (the Lions Club) in my town. We hold lots of fundraisers throughout the year. An upcoming one is our annual Duck Race. We sell tickets ($5 each) and the number on the ticket corresponds with the number on the rubber duck that you are assigned. On the race day, we hold a big event/festival in the center of town (the river flows through the center) where various local businesses set up booths, we have food, drinks, etc., other charities have information tables explaing what they do, etc. At the appointed time, all of the ducks are loaded into a bucket loader and dropped off of the bridge into the river. A few thousand yards (?) downstream, we have a gate, and the first 20 or so ducks through win prizes that are donated by local businesses. We raise about $15K for charity.

As treasurer, I need to provide change for the members who sell tickets throughout town for the next few months. Instead of dollar bills, I am going to put Washington dollar coins in the cash boxes. Mrs. L. already confirmed with a local bank that they have the coins available. Also, on race day, we usually have a change booth for people. I intend to have dollar coins available there as well. Because there are only about 15,000 people in my town, I think I can make a pretty big impact on the circulation of these coins (at least locally).

I just picked up 4 rolls at the bank and will put them into circulation immediatly, after searching them first.

I do not feel the obligation but I do my part. I haven't had paper in my pocket since last Thursday!

I don't know that I feel an "obligation" but I do circulate them. I dont' really spend much cash during the day, but when I do it is metal.

I feel no obligation, but I've enjoyed spending them and seeing the reactions of the recipients

The new prezdollar will only catch on when the people at the register fell comfortable enough to give them out as change or if they have no other choice. The Federal reserve could help the situation by holding back on releasing new paper dollars to banks and slowly weaning the public off the paper version. When the banks start giving stores $50 of coins instead of paper, a trickle down effect will start.
I think they will try quietly to do this when a few billion of them are in circulation. Dec of '07 would be the ideal time to start.

The problem with coins are their weight, I had to keep my jacket on just to carry a couple of rolls, they are too heavy for one pocket, 50 bills in one pocket is much lighter.

I ordered a 500 coin brick from the bank. My YN wants to go through and search for "pop-tops", and if he finds any higher grade pieces, submit to PCGS and to sell for a profit. For the other 490-499 coins, we will spend them! School lunches, Starbucks, etc - I am eliminating the dollar bill from "Bank of Dad" and kids will get dollar coins. The way my kids use their ATM Dad, it will not take long.......

As a numismatist, the new dollar coins really do not excite me. Three hundred million reminds me of a swarm and there is just something about swarms that instead of giving me a sense of obligation, I feel a sense of victimization. I think it's cool that the mint is making these presidentials, but what SHOULD have been done was to LIMIT production of the first year, not open the floodgates the first year.

I guess they forget what happened with the Sacagawea. Or is the intent of the mint to create a new breed of collectors and then a subscription program designed to SELL coins ?
My suspicion is that after this year, it will be "by order" only for the subsequent years of this program. I hope I am wrong, but....

My obligation in numismatics is to be open and honest and only circulate controversy about the new dollars.

I don't feel this obligation at all. In fact, I may be the worse coin collector in this respect, as I almost NEVER use any cash or coins. For me, it's been 100% plastic for years. I carry a $20 Jackson in my wallet, and end up breaking it MAYBE once per month, and that's usually to pay parking at a concert, or something like that. Retail shopping and dining, and all eCommerce is 100% plastic.

Yes. I believe that circulating dollar coins with the Presidents will increase interest in coins and numismatics. Therefore, I will be circulating the dollar coins.

I feel like I missed out on distributing the new dollars in PCGS First Day of Issue holders to people on eBay but also not an obligation.

Yes, and I will. If anyone can get me more I will with those too. Being in Europe, not many of these will enter circulation here unless efforts are made to bring them over. Maybe I'll need to flood the postal machine with $20s for singles stamps, then they'll need to order more dollar coins!

Bought a $1000 dollar brick. Plan on using these instead of dollar bills. Already circulated a few at McDonald's. I give my son's allowance in dollar coins as well.

Today I will get lunch at the work cafeteria and buy with these coins and continue. When I run out I will just get more until I see the option to get change back in coins.

I felt really good not to pull my wallet out and just reach in for enough change to pay for my $4 meal.

Either they work for the needs of commerce or they don't work. Personally I don't think they'll work until the paper version gets withdrawn.

I picked up one roll, kept 5 for myself, gave a few to my son and his friends, also gave away a few at work. That left me with ten that I have spent.......

leaving any one of the $1 coins as tips.

I distribute as many $2 bills and Dollar coins as I can.

I usually pick up a brick of $2s and use that for daily cash, and have recently added $1 coins to the mix.

Nope...I met my obligation when the new sacs came out. I still say a dollar coin is so far behind the times it isn't funny. All I can think is, there used to be five&dime stores everywhere, and a dollar coin was something.......Now that there are Dollar General stores everywhere, why no 10 dollar coin?
