Acetone question

If you acetone wash a coin, what are the chances you will get a body bag? What experience have you had? Would you do it on a valuable coin?

  • As has been said on these forums before, if the PVC has already etched the coin surface, you will most likely get a BB. Done properly and in time, there should be no problem with the coin being holdered, assuming there are no other problems. That being said, I would guarantee that there are coins in top tier holders that had PVC removed in this way.

If the coin has a greenish haze look, it's might be a too late. Scroll down the link and you will see some 60x magnification of the pitting that PVC contact with the coin surface causes.

IMHO, I think and I am sure many of the classic collectors here might confirm, that PVC may have ruined a generation of beautiful coins.

Home Depot in the Paint section, or any hardware store.

Zero chance simply because of using acetone, but acetone only removes contaminants & prevents (future) damage - it doesn't repair damage already present. I've used it successfully many times, and have used it on my most valuable coins. -Preussen
