OK, it's Ash Wednesday, so who's giving up coins for Lent?

I asked Samuel (notlogical) that this morning and after a few moments of reflection he calmly said, "I think I'll give up desserts instead." image

I gave up Catholicism when my Priest started badmouthing "those sinful Jews", so much for tolerance. After he retire His successor was arrested for fondling a parishoners daughter.

    Nope.

My wife is giving up some sweets, though. She's Lutheran, and "giving something up" for Lent is strictly optional. She figures it's a good excuse to try to lose a couple of pounds. image

    No coins...

all sweets though. It never states its required...but its a good way to reflect on certain things.

I shoved my last chocolate bar down at 11:59 last night.

  • Give up coins, no way. I don't give up something for lent. I go the way of Jesus and take something on such as doing deads for the poor.

Does it actually say it in the Bible that you can't eat meat on Friday's?

    Thanks,

    Chris
  • I didn't think it was much of a choice. It was only logical. image

BTW, do you have to be catholic to do lent? image I didn't know that. image

No. Nothing in Scripture. It's just a centuries-old tradition started within the church because some leaders thought it was a good idea to make sacrifices for Lent. It's not at all based on anything in the Bible.

As I was eating dinner I was reading a letter from our parish priest about Lent (he sends letters on all religious holidays). It mentioned that you cannot eat meat on Ash Wednesday. To my horror I realized that I was eating a steak just then. image

Rather than throwing it out, I figured if I was going to Hell anyway, I might as well finish the steak.

    Notlogical...

Its practiced by catholics but also many other religions. It's not necessary and is completley done by choice. I found it tends to differ between churchers more than between different sects of Christians.

My church back home tends to do it...however the one down here does not. (Doesn't mean you cant though)

Good luck with no dessert..thats a toughie.
