OK, it's Ash Wednesday, so who's giving up coins for Lent?
I asked Samuel (notlogical) that this morning and after a few moments of reflection he calmly said, "I think I'll give up desserts instead."

I was punished enough as a kid, with Filet O fishes on Fridays, what a gyp! All for some made up church doctrine. bah. It's not God's law is church law.
I purposely eat double cheese burgers on Fridays during Lent now lol.
p.s.
I gave up Catholicism when my Priest started badmouthing "those sinful Jews", so much for tolerance. After he retire His successor was arrested for fondling a parishoners daughter.
This is now my church
and this is my personal Messiah:
My wife is giving up some sweets, though. She's Lutheran, and "giving something up" for Lent is strictly optional. She figures it's a good excuse to try to lose a couple of pounds.

Now that IS funny!!! Good for you, Samuel.
I don't do lent, I'm pentecostal. I just worship God everyday and give up stuff when he tells me too.

No. Nothing in Scripture. It's just a centuries-old tradition started within the church because some leaders thought it was a good idea to make sacrifices for Lent. It's not at all based on anything in the Bible.

Rather than throwing it out, I figured if I was going to Hell anyway, I might as well finish the steak.

Its practiced by catholics but also many other religions. It's not necessary and is completley done by choice. I found it tends to differ between churchers more than between different sects of Christians.
My church back home tends to do it...however the one down here does not. (Doesn't mean you cant though)
Good luck with no dessert..thats a toughie.
