For those of you that came to this forum as newbies:

Did this forum change your perception of the hobby/industry?

If so, how did that affect your collecting?

This forum has really opened up my eyes to the fact that the 'whales' and experienced collectors in the coin world were just like me but with more coins and more expensive coins. They are willing to help a 'newbie' with many questions which can truly be deemed as stupid (sorry OKBustChaser

) and can find enjoyment in the little things such as a cherry pick worth a couple hundred dollars which monetarily may be insignificant to them. Coming in i was a little intimidated to ask questions to the more established people of this forum but they have welcomed me onto this forum and into the coin world.

This welcoming has led me to start a Dansco 7070 (which has been a blast), start to cherry Bust Halves (or at least try) and to start working with Legend (with the purchase of a PF-63 1858 Seated Dollar).

This forum has definately been a large reason for my expanding collecting interests!

I am still a newbie and will be for awhile, but I have learned considerable amounts of knowledge to include terminology, looks, luster and so much more. Thanks to the boards.

I guess I will always be a newbie. Someone change my diaper the other day...so, I thought I could move to the next level. Unfortunately , I am soiled again.......I will be a newbie forever, that is when you learn. Once you graduate from that level, the learning curve drops significantly. Unfortunately if you pass the newbee test, they call you a wannabee...from what I here from the know it alls, that requires a huge diaper!

My father, common story there, got me into collecting (even though he didn't so much himself), with Whitman blue folders - Kennedys & Lincolns - all circulated. When I was 13 I spent all of the halves on candy or something, maybe some WWF wrestling magazines (which I recentley made a nice amount on off of the Bay). Almost 20 years later the State program got me back into action. I found this board because of my interest in those quarters.

To answer the questions straight up: 1) It VERY much changed my perception, but did not change how I collect now. I only buy what I can afford when I can afford it. However I know better now to swap in my 401k for a "better" collection. For me it's about the marathon, not the sprint. What the board did best for me is broaden my general knowledge and better assist me in speaking with shop owners and at the occasional show. It seems to me that if you don't know the langauge of hobby (cos' that is what it is to me) then you may as well hand over a blank, signed check.

I'm grateful this board exists, for no-charge at that!!!

I'm a newbie to the boards but have been collecting for years. In the past view months I spent $1000 on coins before I realized some of the dumb mistakes I was making. Ugh. The learning curve couldv'e been more expsenive had I not found this forum, to be sure. I"m more focused and better understand the grading of coins and understanding value. Kudos to all.
