Super pix as always, Russ. Obverse: An excellent strike but not an exceptional one. Fairly strong LIBERTY and nice detail in the central obverse, hair knot included. The luster is dimmed; it has that sandblasted look that robs the surfaces of their brilliance. Reverse: Same thing per luster. The strike again is good but not outstanding; note the lack of terrific definition in the bison's head. I'd grade this coin as 64 tops. Keep in mind, I'm never--but never--more than four points off.
I'm reading QDB's buffalo nickel book. It's spectacular. He even tells which percentage of coins come fully struck, moderately struck, etc. for every date. It's a great book.

About a year ago, I sent very similar information, from a five year long study of over 150,000 coins, to Mr Bowers from my extensive strike study. I never got a reply as to whether he wanted to use it. I certainly hope he's not using MY information without my knowledge-it has since been copyrighted. Though I'm not an author anywhere near the stature of Mr Bowers, I sure would like to know where this info came from and I would have appreciated some credit IF the source was from my strike study-NOT that I'm making any accusations. Let me ask you this-does it give a percentage of weak, typical, good, and full strikes for each date/Mint, including the major varieties?
I'll pick up a copy of his book and see what's what.

As a fellow author, I'd encourage you not to imagine the worst, or jump the gun on these sorts of assumptions, until you get to the bottom of things. If you're wrong, it will haunt you for a very long time.

I have absolutely no intent to do so. Nor am I the type that would raise much of a fuss if it turns out that way. However, the information as presented sounds very familiar, as I categorized the coins in my study as weak, typical, good, and full strikes, and it was a synopsis for each date, Mint, and major variety. AllI would ask is for some credit if he used my figures. I know he's probably the most highly regarded author in the business-and rightfully so.
I have since found out that Mr Bowers DID acknowledge his source of information in his book on nickels. I want to apologize to him for going off on a tangent about this-I certainly should have looked at his book BEFORE I even posted on this subject. I had absolutely no idea that he was going to use the information I sent to him. At the time, I knew he was going to do a book on nickels and told him to feel free to use this information if he so chose.
These are great images. Some of the best for Buffalo nickels that I've seen. Great job!

Koynekwest's strike study is incredible as I've mentioned to him many times. For a specialist, I can hardly imagine more valuable information in this series.

That might be because it's a proof.

Well aren't I a rube. Doesn't look like a matte proof to me at all.

Not mine. I just got the pleasure of imaging it.
