How long do you wait?
I purchased a coin on January 20, 2007. I have contacted the seller multiple times about the coin. He replied the first time stating "he would check on it" and has failed o reply ever since. In your humble opinion how long should I wait before taking action with Paypal or ebay etcetera?

After 30 days the item was delivered. Sometimes USPS loses things.
I would not neg or make any threats. Get a tracking number and help in finding the coins.
Some of the more recent negative was not there when I purchased the coin. Not too much money at stake. He has not confirmed it even shipped, let alone given me a tracking number.

I think you have waited long enough.

Paypal requires you open a dispute within 40 days of the auction end. A dispute is not a "neg" or formal charges, so the seller shouldn't be offended--I suggest you get on that now since he's not answering your emails. He'll have a chance to respond to the dispute and perhaps you can work this out before it escalates to a claim and before either of you feedback bombs the other.
Man, he has some serious problems. Hope you get it resolved.

<< <i>Unfortunately most of that feedback, including a neg on the same type of silver dollar I ordered showed up later. His email appears to be United States Army. I am willing to be patient, but I don't want to default either. I posed this question because I did not want to jump the gun, as I am predisposed to doing. >>
Hope he didn't ship out when he had open auctions going!
By the way, I paid a UK seller on the 8th of January but still don't have the goods. I've been in contact with him and he's cooperating. I believe he shipped it promptly, but I still need to prepare to file if I don't have it by the 44th day after paying.

I think you gave this seller plenty of time to at least give you shipping info.
<< <i>The "I'll check on it", and then a complete lack of followup is unacceptable. File the PayPal claim now.

I agree with Russ. File now and send him more e-mails. You know what they say about the squeaky wheel.

<< <i>I filed the dispute, so we will wait another 20 days and see. >>
That's the only way to do it no matter what others have said IMO. I just went through this on a bargin $130 coin that took over a month for delivery with a user with about 50 feedbacks and a 98% postive. I thought I lost my money and had checked on contacting his local police to file charges if possiable. Long story short I filled a dispute and the guy came through, of course I didn't leave any feedback since I didn't want any in return. A risk that I should have known better on but I haven't been ripped off in over 9 years on Ebay.
This user has a lot of feedbacks and won't want to get kicked off for a $30 coin. If you didn't pay for insurance then you maybe out of luck and shouldn't claim anyway IMO since the PO could have lost your coin. Live and learn
