The Ebay enigma...

I've never bought or sold anything on ebay. However, I've resoved to to take the plunge and an give it a try. I have a broad range of coins: sets, registered, non register, old, bullion, dark side, you name it. I'm doing for a few reasons: minimize the bulk of my collection, focus my collection and I need cash to finish my basement.

Does anybody have any advice for an ebay newbie? Any traps to watch out for (i.e., buyer scams)? What generally sells the best on ebay vs. other means (i.e, should I keep it to the lower price items and maybe sell the registered high grade stuff at an aution site like Heritage or Teletrade). Is it always wise to provide for a no questions asked return policy? Should I give out my phone number and talk directly with a buyer each time I make a sell? Is it better to use paypal or accept a check and wait for it to clear before I mail the product.

I know these are basic and broad questions. But any words of wisdom from the experience folks out there would be appreciated.

Thanks

OK, I'll start: answer to the above question is a resounding NO. For sanity and safety reasons (plus it is not needed), avoid giving out your phone number or contacting your buyers through any method other than the "my ebay" messaging system. In eight years on ebay I have talked with one seller, that's it.

Seriously, you will do best in searching the forum archives - maybe a search with "Ebay" and "selling" in the search parameters. Lots written here.

Good photos, a minimum of hype, don't use "L@@K"... Lot of great suggestions.

    Good luck!

Edited to add: you may want to hold off listing your high value stuff until you have some feedback - some people around here may think that it's a scam.

My phone number is in every auction I list....gotta question give me a call......I feel customer support is the single most important aspect of business, any business. You may have to leave a message if I'm attending to another customer, but I return every call.....

    Just my humble opinion.

You can glean pricing information by reviewing ebay auctions etc.... however, I would suggest, rather than ebay, the BST board here... I review it daily, as do many others. Cheers, RickO

Very large clear coin photos - all coins - & honesty as to grade and problems for raw coins. PCGS holdered coins can start at no reserve and reach greysheet bid. So can vams. NGC - expect 80% or so of market, 70% or so for ANACS. Less for others, with raw being tough sales unless you're willing to part with them at low prices. These are general rules, it depends on the coin of course. Up to a couple thousand per coin use eBay, other consign it to Heritage. Only a few hundred, max, for a single raw coin (at least Morgan business strikes) - in my experience - as people just don't buy raw uncertified coins from strangers - too many scams out there.

Taking Paypal increases revenues. It's worth it. Few buyers will send personal checks when you accept PayPal. Ship with delivery confirmation or registered over $500 insured or so to prove receipt. Always insure coins, and require it for buyers. Very few people return coins when you take PayPal, are honest, have large photos, and a no-questions asked return policy. The "All sales final" is a big turn off, sign of a scam, and scares away bidders.

I'd start by listing lower priced items, first. People may be suspicious if a new user pops up selling high value items--unfortunately, many people who fit that description are scammers selling items they don't have.

As has also been suggested, you can always try the BST board first, as there are no fees and it can save a lot of headache.

Good pictures are also a must.
