Half die varieties question

When it comes to overton varieties, at which rarity is a premium to be expected. I am thinking of buying an unattributed R-4 coin, if i needed to sell in the future (it wouldn't be the near future) should a premium be expected for a R-4? If so how much?

Thanks for any information and i am new to the half dollar varieties but the series has sparked an interest in me. I recently recieved my overton half dollar varieties book (3rd ed.) and I am tryin to put it to good use.

    Most capped R-4's carry very little if any premium...at best probably 10 to 20 percent. Unless, of course, the "It's the ONE I NEED" syndrome kicks in which can (and has) happened to most Overton collectors. R-4+ carry a bit more, but R-5 is where the premium really starts kicking in.
    Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

    K thanks, I think i found a 1831 O-113 which in the third edition is rated an R-4, is it still an r-4 in the 5th edition? Also is there a web site with rarity updates? Thanks again OKBustChaser image

    Still considered R-4.

    That's a neat variety with the broken arrows. You might want to join the John Reich Society (which includes the journal). I think that they (in conjunction with the Bust Half Nut club) make periodic modifications in the R ratings. One of the bust afficianados can probably tell you more.

    Try Dave Rutherford's site, busthalfprices. The subscription will cost $20/yr, of which $4 is donated to the BHNC and JRCS.

    The source I use the most, and which has the most accurate info, is Steve Herrman's Auction and Mail Bid Prices Realized. He tracks all the important sales, and private sales of leading dealers, for all R3+ and higher rated coins. He attributes all auction lots with images to avoid inclusion of misattributions, and puts out the single best tool for gauging values of rarer bust halves. He can be reached at Herrman102@aol.com
