Is it just me, or does this 1937D 3 leg buffalo look fake?
I don't claim to be an expert, but this one just doesn't look right to me. There should be a hoof showing for the missing leg, and the rear leg is not "moth eaten". The third feather on the obverse looks like it is complete, and it wouldn't be on a true 3 leg. Do you think this looks suspicious? PCI slabbed it, but I have concern with the authenticity. What say you, buffalo experts?

1. The right-hand part of the bottom of the bison's beard doesn't extend lower, in tooth-like fashion, than the left part.
2. The back of the Indian's neck doesn't have the abraded flea-bitten appearance.
3. The bison's hind leg is too full and sturdy--it should look skinny and tubercular.
4. Finally, the bison ain't pissin' so the leg ain't missin'!
(I think there's another diagnostic concerning UNUM, but this is enough to expose any fake right away.

Good way of putting it! Did PCI REALLY slab this thing or is there some manipulation with the picture as has been mentioned?
<< <i>I don't think the closeup is the same coin as in the holder. >>
The obverses are most surely the same.
<< <i>But it's certified!
Certified and pitiful.........
Could the slab have been opened and the coin replaced somehow? I cracked a coin out of one of these one time and the case seemed to just split right along the seam. I could have replaced the coin i took out and just glued it back together. Bob
<< <i>So...I guess is it a safe bet that JT and the boys will NOT be putting this one in the new signature series huh???
I wonder what sort of grade/authenticity guarantee they now offer since he's in charge.

PS. Sometimes counterfeits are polished and cleaned to make them more difficult to detect as they are going for rarity not grade. And we all know that many a good coins have been cleaned and polished. Bottom line, have it inspected in person by an expert.

<< <i>I would not jump the gun on this, its tough enough to detect a good counterfeit in person much less from a picture.

I'll jump the gun in this case. It is impossible to polish or otherwise doctor a normal 37-D to make it look like a three 3-legger. The coin is fake, period.

Good word. DOn't get to use tubercular ina sentence often.

<< <i>I would not jump the gun on this, its tough enough to detect a good counterfeit in person much less from a picture. The coin appears to have been cleaned and polished, If the coin indeed has been cleaned and polished it would have wiped away or obliterated some of the obvious diagnostics and would make it much harder to determine authenticity in person much less through a poor photo.

way back when.....there was a thread started on here by me that had a PCI 1856 Flying Eagle cent as the subject of it. The coin was as fake as a 3 dollar bill. Someone began posting to the thread claiming to be from PCI...some lady or something.

I don't need it "in hand." This one can be authenticated by a blind man. (It's NOT authentic, BTW.)

GOOD! As a radiologist, if you get to start using that word a lot, I'M going to start getting worried.
