New member to the forum, and I gotta be honest, I love this place. Unlike so many other forums of this type, I find the information to be top notch and the amount of education that is pumped out on a dail basis to be tremedous.
Anyway, I have been collecting now for about three years, trying to buy the lower mintage type of stuff as well as any good deals on gold and silver, as I think both are going much, much higher.
Last week, I mad this purchase on EBAY. Please tell me what you think and don't hold back your disdain.
I know I prolly overpaid by a bit. I paid the MS60 greysheet for a MS58 coin. However, often do you have a chance to buy a coin that has a mintage of just over 2545. I am a sucker for these low pop
$2.50, $5, and $10 gold pieces.

Nice quarter eagle, low mintage too. The only potential problem with low mintage quarter eagles is that there aren't many collectors for them. (Except for the big rarities like the 1841, 1848 CAL., 1863, 1875, etc.). If you can accept that, then I'd say you did pretty well.

Anyway, it's not unusual at all to pay MS-60+ money for a nicer AU-58 coin. Most collectors I know value a particularly nice AU-58 coin more highly than MS-60s. Around here we affectionately call them "AU-62s" or "AU-63s" to indicate that they are so nice for the grade that they are probably worth MS-62 or MS-63 money.
I think you did well. Low pop pieces always have a market and don't last long in dealer's cases if priced right. I agree with the others about au58 coins. A lot of times the wear is so slight and the coin looks nice while a lot of MS60-62 coins have unsightly gashes or marks.
The only potential problem with low mintage quarter eagles is that there aren't many collectors for them.
I agree with prior comments re: collectors & availability of coins. It's a tough, lonely project.
