Error Coin, What is this error type called?
I'll try and get a couple of good pictures to show the error after work, but for now I'll do my best to describe it.
My wife uses a coin dispenser at work, and a coin had jammed up the action. When she pulled it out it was very odd.
Its a 2000 Virginia State Quarter (Philly) with no edge reeding, the edge is smooth and the ledge of the edge is at least double thick with a pronounced lip instead of the usual short shelf. It has a smooth radiused edge instead of flat reeded edge.
Any idea how common these are or what could cause it? I was thinking incorrect Planchet or edge pressing is just missing.
The obverse and reverse show full normal detail best I can tell. Interesting to note is that you can really tell the cladding thicknesses because of the lack of reeding.
Thanks in advance,
Steve L.

Since it was struck out of collar, it has no reeding.

I'll check the diameter of the coin with my calipers when I get home from work and report back.
If its damage from something, it did a good job of totally removing the reeding, and didn't scuff it up (its still smooth as silk)
Thanks again and check back later for pictures!

My coin (and I suspect yours) are termed 'partial collar strikes' for obvious reasons. If there is no trace of reeding at all on your coin, it would be considered a 'broadstrike'. I suspect, because the coin only expanded slightly beyond the normal diameter, that there is at least some trace of reeding on your coin.

<< <i>Thanks for all your thoughts, it doesn't look like your Cali quarter in that the coin is perfectly centered and even, and the ledge is much more pronounced.

My 1965 was perfectly centered as well. You don't need calipers to check the diameter. Just place it in a stack of normal quarters and you immediately see that it is larger than the others. It would also explain why it jammed the machine.
BTW, I did the caliper test on this coin and on a random bicentenial quarter and will post dimensions measured below.
Bicentenial quarter:
Smallest Diameter: .954
Largest Diameter: .956
Smallest Thickness: .066
Largest Thickness: .073
Virginia quarter (error?):
Smallest Diameter: .933
Largest Diameter: .936
Smallest Thickness: .083
Largest Thickness: .094
These were measured by sampling around the clock of the coin in very tiny increments.
Let me know if the pictures helped at all.
Thanks again,
Steve
