Type set collecting idea

JoeLewisJoeLewis Posts: 1,913 ✭✭✭✭
I've been working on my Dansco 7070 type set for a few months, and I've recently noticed that it's not as fun as I hoped it would be. Finally, I realized that I am feeling forced to fill all those holes.

I realized that I'm not really interested in having two seated liberty dollars(for example) (one with motto and one without.) That doesn't really interest me. I just want a nice example of a seated liberty dollar. All the other "varieties" in the book are bogging me down in the same way.

Anyway, I think I'm going to stop using the album, define my type set the way I want it, and collect that way. The only problem is, how do I store the coins?

Why not keep going with the album but modify it to meet your needs. Instead of 2 seated dollars, use one spot for a draped bust or flowing hair? You can do the same with other slots. Just make your own labels to cover up the "wrong" wording.

Personal opinion, I'd keep the two bust halves. To me, those are significantly different. I understand your point with the dollars, or legend vs. stars on the seated material. But even on seated half dime and dime, maybe try using a no star variety which is not listed in the album.

There are many ways to jazz up the collection. Besides my 7070, I also put together a 20th Century Capitol Plastics. I used first year of issue on each one in a mid-MS grade, usually 63s and 64s. The only one I didn't go for is the 1916 SLQ.

A number of solutions present themselves to me.

    1) Store them in the holders a single third party grading service of your choice. If they are all in the same slab, it preserves the uniform look of the set.
    2) Store them in intercept 2x2's then store the 2x2's in an eagle 2x2 page.
    3) Store them in regular 2x2's and keep them in a regular 2x2 page.

I like a basic design set. When I was trying for a complete type set I suffered from SDO (Seated Design Overload.) Motto, no motto. Stars, no stars. Arrows. Rays. Many denominations all with a seated Liberty. Just one seated coin of each denomination is a great way to start.

The empty holes in a Dansco would drive me crazy. You could put your coins in 2x2s or Cointains or something. Then you would need to get creative. I don't know, I'm not that creative, maybe a binder with pages that would hold the coins? Some cabinet type of thing custom made of finely finished hardwood could be awesome if your other hobby is wood working...

Also, are you collecting certified coins?

Make your own set using Eagle Coin pages.

As a type collector it’s pretty easy to get “Seated Liberty fatigue syndrome.” The reason that there are so many minor types, and some of them like the 1873-4 with arrows coins can be both boring and expensive.

One way I found to get around that is go for one coin of each denomination first. In other words look for a Seated half dime, dime, quarter, twenty cent piece, half dollar and dollar. THEN you might get bitten by the bug and decide to fill in more of the minor type holes that exist in your set. Or you might decide that it’s not worth it.

There are no rules when in comes to collecting, only options. The only thing I will say that some options, like buying problem coins, can cost you money in the long run. But since it’s a hobby making money should not be your first priority.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Here's a thread about building a US type set that is on the NGC boards. It lists many options on how to make the set more personal and rewarding while still keeping the Dansco 7070 album. It is worth a read.

I also started a Dansco 7070 and got a little bored. The liberty seated series are one of my favorites, but I also like Barber, flowing hair, IHCs, and don't tell anyone, but I also like some of the modern crap. So what I'm doing is collecting by years. I've almost completed an 1853 year set including the gold. Maybe I'll do one from 1875 just to show the twenty cent piece. Next I think I'll work on something from about 1895, then something from the early 1900s maybe 1920.

I'm not hung up on mint marks or complete date sets. I guess I'm heading toward a collection that shows the evolution of U.S. coinage. From half cents, three cent nickels, and double eagles to clad dollars (that no one wants) and bullion.

I like Coin World Holders.....and if you like Pro graded coins they can be stored togather. They are a little on the expensive side but I feel that a nice coin should have some protection.....and I like the looks of slabs just not the opinions insid that you have to pay for.

The 7070 just doesn't make sense to me. Eagle is a great way to keep your coins certified and display them well, although a littlle expensive. I haven't went this route yet but have been considering it for a long time because you can build it the way you would like.
