1895 Morgan w/ the mint mark removed

Hello, I am new to this board, but have lurked here awhile, finally joined! I just bought a group of Morgan dollars and one was an 1895 with no mint mark. Upon closer inspection one can see where the mm was removed, and very well done. My question for you all --- is this coin worth bullion price only, or is it still worth a premium because it is a somewhat rare date? The coin probably grades fine-to very fine. Thanks

  • usually coins with altered/removed mintmarks are worth bullion, but since that is a scarcer date you might be able to get a premium for it.

Slight premium for the year....it would make a good album coin in an album that only shows 1 side of the coin.

No premium. It's considered counterfeit I believe. Melt is my opinion.
What slot would you put it in anyway? The O or S or Philly?

  • Thanks for the replies, I personally wouldn't want it in my album, but then again, I hate to relegate it to the "junk pile". I guess I'll just keep it as a novelty and forever curse the guy who removed the mint mark.

I've seen those go for hundreds of dollars on eBay.

The fun is determining what the mint mark was from other diagnostics; generally the date placement will give it away.

  • It is worth something, to many buyers. Sure some, especially dealers will pay nothing for it.

My guess would be, at true auction (Ebay, Teletrade or Heritage), in an ANACS problem slab, it would probably bring $200 or more. How much more depends on how the coin looks.

Some folks would settle for such a coin for a Morgan date set (one of each year).

Well, you're not going to get the full price that you would for the 95-S in that grade, but I'm sure someone might hit 50-75% of the 95-S grade just to have something that they could fill that expencive 95 proof slot in a dansco.

It's worth far less than any authentic, unaltered 1895-dated coin, but if it's an authentic coin with the mintmark removed it's probably still worth considerably more than melt for someone working on a "one a year" date set. In such a set 1895 is the key, and ANY authentic 1895-dated Morgan, even if altered, is worth something.
  • What a sad outcome for a decent 1895 Morgan otherwise.image

image to the Forum, RikiTikiTavi! Enjoy! Sorry to hear your Morgan was not a genuine 1895 Philly.

I always wanted one of these for my Morgan Set in Dansco albums. Could never afford a real 1895 proof. I would put it on Ebay and suspect it would bring good money. It is not a counterfeit, just damaged.

  • Thanks for the welcome , Rich! Yea, when I was going thru those morgans(which I bought for $2.00 each from a widow) I saw that date........Then i turned the coin over and NO MINTMARK!!! I thought I hit the big lotto on that one, but closer inspection revealed the truth!! Oh well, it's still a nice coin....

I was at a small-time live auction about 7-8 years ago and an 1895 Morgan with the mintmark removed went for $50. I believe the coin was in AU condition.

About five years ago I was offered a high grade 1895 with a removed mint mark. It was a 1995-O which is valuable in it's own right. I have never figured out why someone would do that. image
