Couple of new seated dimes

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,650 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here are a couple of Seated dimes I picked up today (seller's photos). Paid retail for them from a well-known dealer's website, which is against my nature, but I thought these two were particularly nice. The 1839-P was graded AU-55, but I put it at AU-50, with a nice strike. The 1851-O is just a difficult issue to obtain. It was graded at EF-40, though some might argue it is VF-35. I like this particular coin because it has nice, even color and is free from nicks and cuts. Very few of these appear at auction in any grade, and I would rather have this date than an 1849-O, which seems to be commoner than its reputation would indicate (seated dime collectors may want to comment on that). Hope you liked seeing these.

Nice coins. I agree with your grades, not the dealer's. No surprise there.

Great dimes, you can't ever go wrong with a Seated coin. Both look original and unmolested.

    Congratulations!

    What Cladiator said.

I love those O-mintmarks for some reason. Particularly when it's inside the wreath.

I received both of these today. The 1839 has gorgeous gunmetal blue rim toing on the obverse, and a bit on the reverse, which doesn't show in the pics. It's a very choice AU-50, with not a hairline to be found in the fields. Definitely a coin that most forum members would approve of (you toning fanatics). I still grade it AU-50, not 55, due to obvious wear on Liberty's knee, but it would be difficult to find a nicer one for the grade.

The 1851-O is just as nice as its picture suggests, evenly worn and without distracting marks. Ever look at the PCGS populations on the 1851-O dime? image I will speculate again that this issue is much scarcer than the 1849-O in all grades above VG. The PCGS pop. report would seem to support that assertion. Just go to any Seated dealer's table at a show, or Dick Osburn's website, or the Seated dime category on ebay, and you'll see numerous examples of the 1849-O for sale, but few 1851-O. Any 1851-O offered for sale is likely to be ugly, cleaned, or worn out. I don't feel too bad about overpaying for this one.

Don't let the number of 49 O's on ebay fool you. I have starting to sell some duplicates and have put up 6 49 O's. I have not started to list 51 O's yet.

The 51 O however is only slightly more common in f-xf, once you get into AU the 49 O is even harder. As for an UNC both are really rare coins to come by.

The prices on the 49 O's sometimes tend to bring more to market. The 51 O is really underpriced.
I seldom check PM's but do check emails often jason@seated.org
