Just bought an 1889 cc Morgan, how did I do?

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,375 ✭✭✭✭
I was looking for a lower grade example that still looked presentable, and I thought this one did nice. I didnt want a coin that was cleaned or damaged. I dont think I got a steal, but how does everyone think of the grade/price?

1889 cc

Thanks for looking!

The coin is nice. That seems to be true for most of the coins I am seeing in the new ANACS holders. So far as price goes, I can't help. I don't follow the Morgan series.

Appropriately graded, very natural, original look to it, good price, I think you did well.

Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

Everything about the coin is wonderful and beautiful except one teensy thing: It's overgraded.

The ANA Grading Guide states that rims on a Morgan must be complete in order to be a VG08, and the reverse on this coin is clearly not. Sorry, but I'd only grade this coin Good-06, and I'd fully expect PCGS to do the same, even though the obverse is clearly much better and the originality and eye appeal of the entire coin is exceptional.
    When in doubt, don't.

I have VG-08 that is probably more like a G-06 and its in a PCGS holder, but I like original surfaces so I bought it. Frankly, its a 1889-CC and you can't go wrong on one of those. Nice coin! I like it!

Does this coin complete the CC series for you?

That begs the question: How do you balance technical grade with eye appeal? While this coin may technically not be a VG, it certainly has eye appeal. For VG money, would most rather have a slightly overgraded coin like this, or one with full rims but is butt ugly?

I certainly wouldn't be ashamed to fill that elusive hole with this specimen...

I don't know what the TPGs do re a circulated coin with more eye appeal than one usually finds of such a coin in a given grade. Re Uncs., based on what I've seen, the coin often gets a bump. If that's the case with circs, I could see this one graded VG 08.

    Hi Everyone,

This doesnt finish my Carson City collection, but I have the 85 and now the 89. I liked this one as it didnt have many detracting marks on liberties face. I didnt notice the rims in the pictures as they were small. I will keep this in the ANACS holder. One key down...a few more to go. I will post better pics when I get it in hand. Thanks everyone!
