4 pc UNC Gold AGE sets

I ordered 4 more of the 4 pc gold sets last nite, today they are "in stock and reserved" so I guess they aren't sold out yet. I don't get it...since you absolutely can't lose money on the deal, why aren't they all gone? Looks like someone with lots of cash would go nuts on it.

I asked the same question about the single 2006 w uncirculated coins that the mint put out.
$19.99 was a bargin of a life time. The next closest uncirculated ASE mintage is the '96 and that mintage is in the millions. I bought and bougt and bought.

Cause all us speculators are tapped out on AGE 3-Coin Sets, ASE 3-Coin Sets, Plat 4-Coin Sets, Plat 1 oz Singles, and Gold Fractionals.

I agree they are winners, but I do not shoose to put 50% of my life savings into coins.... although they certainly outperform my other investments....

I don't believe the profit potential is high enough for the big guns to dive in. I am considering a few but they just don't knock my socks off like the Plats and SAE sets. The reverse is very ho-hum imho. If they grade 69 you would about break even if you sell on the bay and take Paypal. Those factors weigh heavy at this point.

Because they are selling on ebay as individual coins for more than they cost.

Yeah! Coinboy had a thread about this. If you buy the set for $1350 from the mint. You can sell off the (now sold out at Mint) fractionals for
    1/2 ounce $480
    1/4 ounce $285, and
1/10 ounce$140. This totals $905. You get to keep the 1 oz for $445, which is less than melt. Of course, you have to sell the fractionals first.

I also noticed that these sets are on eBay for a BIN of $1750, and they are available from the mint at $1350. Talk about crazy money.

Assuming you can get those prices, and nothing is for sure, then there are all the fees, is it really worth it for a 5% profit?

well there is $200 leeway there in case you don't realize those prices, and you can use the BST board. The fact is, on paper, its profitable.

Gold is a good investment right now and these coins having a change of making good money is a big plus IMOimage

So the availability of the sets is keeping the other coins in check in price. Once the sets sell out then the other coins should start moving.

These gold Unc sets were in a backorder status for the past few weeks up to this AM.

Now, they seem to be readily available.
For example, the Mint just allowed me to add 298 sets to my cart.image

That's $402,300.00 !!!!!....I'll go and empty it now, thank you.

I doubt the computer has a maximum set in the database. I would expect that a human would review orders and determine if it is necessary to recuce an order. If they've got 15 sets left and you order 1000, they'll probably reduce your order to 15 when they verify it in a couple of days.

What they will do, and this takes time, is hold your order, and fill what they can, and put what they can't on back order.

Not to mention the 2007 tsunami coming soon: Gold Buffs 1 oz. & Fractionals - Circulation Strikes and Proofs, ASE, AGE & APE Proofs, ASE, AGE and APE "W" Uncs, ASE, AGE and APE Circulation Strikes, Presidential Dollars in Circulation Strikes and Proofs, Presidential Spouses in Circulation Strikes and Proofs, Regular and Silver Proof Sets, Regular and Silver Quarter Sets, Mint Sets, Kennedy Rolls and Bags, Sac Rolls and Bags, and of course, a full complement of Commemoratives, no doubt.

Do you think that the market will absorb it all, or do you think there will be some sleepers? And do you think that the whole paradigm of "low mintage" is about to be turned on its ear?

"And do you think that the whole paradigm of "low mintage" is about to be turned on its ear?"

Very good question. "Low" is a relative term, in particular, mintage is low if it is small compared to the number of collectors with a devoted interest to a particular series.

If there are only a few hundred people interested in completing a particular series, a mintage of 2500 may be high.

I expect them to drop in price with the slighlty higher than expected 4-coin set numbers...but it still puts it as the key. In three years you're gonna be kicking yourself all the way down the street.

i wasn't planning on holding onto it for 3 years. the goal was to sell it and maybe half pay for the
jamestown $5, or go back and buy the san fran $5 i wasn't able to get.

For what it’s worth, I’ve placed orders for 43 sets (mostly one order at a time, but a few were 2 at a time) over the past few days. I know I can’t lose on this trade, plus the miles I earn (on this one trade alone) will give me a free round trip, anywhere in the world, First Class!

And, I’m placing another set of multiple orders tonight (20-30).

Just out of curiosity, why do you think this is a "no brainer" in light of the fact that the four-coin set numbers seem to be coming up higher than we thought (way higher than I thought, actually) and that the set is still in stock and for sale (as I've just verified) and we don't know what the final numbers will be?

I have no problem with the gold uncirculated sets. I have just sold all the 1 oz gold from my sets. The fractionals are much more limited and what I want.
  • Options
Has it occured to anyone that if several thousand of these sets are cannibalized to take advantage of the higher market price of the fractionals, that eventually an intact set of these coins might become the rarity?

    ar·bi·trage
–noun 1. Finance. the simultaneous purchase and sale of the same securities, commodities, or foreign exchange in different markets to profit from unequal prices.

Kinda like when you could get the Goodacre Sacs from H.E. Harris at $200 each and sell them on eBay for $400.

Am I missing something isn't the max mintage for the 4 coin set 27,000?

I also see they list the mintage of the individual proofs at 12,000.

So why are you guys talking about not knowing how many sets?

I think the Mint is flipping all the returns....they cannot possibly be minting more.
10 000 sounds about right with the current nn numbers , that means less than 15000 1/2 and 1/4 oz which should bring a great premium in a few years if they dont design another new key in a year or 2.
