Does anyone collect modern US platinum coins?

Obviously a lot of the buyers on this board are primarily buying these to sell but who's collecting them?

Proofs and Unc-w I collect them all, even the high mintage "dogs" with mintages in the 8-14k range. You know like common Hawiian halves. I focus on the frationals because they are cheaper. I don't even own one mint state platinum eagle with the eagle flying over the sun because I think the set is going to become a type collection like the old commem halves are today.

I've been collecting the MS$10 and Proof $25 since 1999. Picked up my 06-W's at the box today postmarked 1/8/07

I have, and I do more so now. I will continue through 08 at least. Been a good ride, a good study, a good edumacation, and it helped me along in other areas that were out of reach in the past.

I am, although after seeing the profit in flipping, I wish I bought more w unc from the mint....so I can better afford these coins that I lust after.

No. I sold the few I had a while back and didn't buy this latest release.

I like them very much. The metal itself is scarce and more expensive than gold. The metal is super heavy, inert and hard. I love the feel of a platinum coin in my hand. It is cool because it is heavy. I like that the US Mint changes the reverse design. I like the low mintages. I think there is a lot to like about modern Plats!

Have a couple of smaller ones from years ago. I like them, but they are a bit too pricey for me to keep collecting all of them, year after year. There are just too many other interests competing for my coin budget.

I've been collecting the half-once proofs since they came out.

Unfortunately, like so many others, I stopped buying them from the mint in 2004 when the price went up significantly.

Luckily, I was abe to pick up the 2005 & 2006 this past year on ebay for decent(now looking cheap) prices.

Unfortunately, I still need the 2004 for my registry set!

A few years ago, I started picking off any pieces in MS69/PR69 on ebay that were going for close to spot.

I could not believe my good fortune in 2004 when I came across a seller that was selling complete sets( at that time, '97-'03) of tenth-once and half-once PR69's for a little over spot. Although it was a lot of $ for me at the time, I pulled the trigger on both sets. Looking back, I'm glad that I did.

I've also accumulated a nice stash/hoard of MS69 tenth-once coins.

In late 2004 or early 2005, I discovered this board by doing a search for platinum eagles as I had started collecting them. Unfortunately, I was too late to buy the '04 proofs from the mint. When I did the search, the most current post concerning platinum eagles was about five months old. That's right, this place was a ghost town as far as platinum was concerned. But that didn't discourage me. I bought the '05 proof set and an extra one-ouncer. I also was buying the '05 unc bullion, although I later learned this is probably not a good idea because, as scarce as proof platinum collectors are, unc bullion platinum collectors are way scarcer. I still have my unc bullion and since platinum was under $1K/ounce back then, I could sell them now for a decent profit.

I think I'm just drawn to platinum. If there were classic platinum coins, I would probably be collecting those. But there aren't any. It's all modern crap

I finished a set of $10 proof plats last year with the 04 being the one I had to shell out big bucks for.
I started the $25 proof set and only have the 06 ,03, and 01.
But the good news is I am in at square one with the $10 and $25 w uncirculated

I had a guy tell me today that the 2006 MS Plat with Eagle reverse was somehow limited and hot, I told him maybe he was confused, it was the legislative W that was limited and hot, and he said no, it was the eagle reverse--he must know something I dont--its not a hard thing to believe, i dont really know much

W-mint plat was my first platinum coin and I fell in love. I will sell some of my gold and silver eagles and plan to buy more plat eagles(diversify), future as well as past issues.

I've collected the $10.'s in proof and uncirculated since they were first minted. This has nothing to do with potential future profit. i just liked the designs, the coins and the metal itself.

According to the mint's website, the mintages of the regular MS coins are quite low, but not as low as the "W" coins.

I think the '06 $10 uncirculated (eagle reverse)plat's numbers will be low enought to warrant some attention.

Quattrocoin, I like the 50$ also.....Do you have to slab your registry coins pcgs or do they accept ngc for grade? Ive been sniping up a storm on Ebay...maybe getting some better deals while everyone was concentrating on 2006w. I thought the 50$ were the best collectable as they have lowest mintages of the denominations and are large enough to marvel at.

They have to be in PCGS plastic in order to be entered into a PCGS registry set. NGC(

) accepts both brands in their registry.

The half is my favorite too. Expensive but not like the $100 and big enough to be impressive and not need a glass. This is a good time to buy the low mintage proof plat commems while the market is distracted. I do think the window of opportunity for the platinum commems is still open right now but the crack looks like it is going to be much smaller over the next year or two.

I picked up a couple of 1/2 ozs today at APMEX, 2001 & 2002, better price than ebay.
Ebay has a plenty of MS but very few PRs in PCGS and I don't want NGC label.

I like your idea of calling them "commems". With the reverses changing each year I believe that the terminology fits perfectly!

Ill keep my eye on that site too...thanks. I have a few NGC ...2 pr70s that have no marks, and the 69 does have. Im undecided what I will do with the holder situation. I like how they look in the mint container....the slabs are safer. I worry how depressed I would be with pcgs grades....my first submission of 8 coins from my grandfather's collection had 4 body bags. I would think less risk for apes though.

Teletrade started using the "plat. commem." terminology quite a while back, due to the changing Vistas Of Liberty Series proof reverse designs, beginning in 1998 with the "Eagle Over New England" rev., followed in '99 by "Eagle Above Southeastern Wetlands", 2000's "Eagle Above America's Heartland", '01's "Eagle Above America's Southwest", and '02's "Eagle Fishing in America's Northwest".

Now what was that question? Are you asking about 1913 Nickels?

If you're talking about Platinum Eagles - I collect them. I like them much more than those processed old coins you can get from 1000's of Dealers, big and small, wannabee and whatever.

The regular 2006 BU Plats were looking like a low mintage issue early in the year due to the high cost of the metal. As the year progressed the spot dropped a bit and ordering picked up, leaving 2006 a so-so year. Anyone with some 2006's in stock would want to make believe they are hot and limited. Those in the know, know they are BS'in.

Very few dealers have these coins. One of the things that normally has to happen before a coinage issue starts moving is dealer inventories need to be low. They are and thats a real long term plus you don't see talked about much.

Are you speaking specificly of 2006-w? If not there are currently PT higher mintage years where 69's and below are tied closely to melt price. Are you talking about waiting for metal prices to drop? Or do you want a 70?

I have a full set of $10's in proof and uncirculated coins. I will now collect the W series but I haven't decided on which size since I have the full set (won't be the set). Overall about 30 plat's is that collection or flipping?
