Flying eagle question
I am very unfamiliar with these coins, so I need a little advice.
I can buy a pcgs au58 1858 LL for $180 right now. Is that price about right?
Sorry for the newbness, any opinions would be dymanite.
Thanks
I ended up picking up this coin because I thought it looked pretty good in hand. I ended up paying less than I originally thought. Here it is.

anyone wanna chime in here and help? Thanks.
Another problem is spotting and / or ugly toning.
I have one of these in PC 5. The strike is good, and the eye appeal is slightly better than average, but not outstanding. Eye appeal on Uncs. is rarely outstanding.
Look at your coin carefully when it arrives. If you have luster breaks in the areas that aren't struck up well, you have a coin that will grade AU all day long, and is not worth submitting for upgrade. Look at the upper feathers in the wing to the viewer's rt., the tailfeathers, and the lower breastfeathers below the top of the eagle's wing closer to the viewer on the obverse. Look at the middle & upper wreath on the reverse.
The surfaces on the coin appear to be good, and I only see a few small spots.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
$215 in AU50, 225 in AU53, 240 in AU55, 255 in AU58, and 350 in MS60.
Even if those prices sound a bit high, I think you did pretty well. One nice thing about Numismedia is their breakdown of all the AU grades. And it's free to use for the MS60 and lower stuff- you gotta be a subscriber for the MS prices. (I think PCGS should do something similar for their online priceguide to prevent scammers who abuse it by quoting it while selling third world plastic).
If you say Redbook puts it at $180 in AU50 and you got a PCGS AU58 at Redbook AU50 price, that alone sounds reasonable to me, if the coin isn't ugly. And if the coin in your picture is the one you just bought, I would say you did well and got a sharp-looking piece. Heck, I would buy it at that price.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
The coin in hand looks very much like the pics. Surfaces are very clean.
I feel that the coin is graded as high as it would go. There is very slight rub on the breast, and lacks a little detail in the upper leaves of the wreath.
Looking at alot of these on Heritage there are some in anacs and ngc holders not this nice at 61-62, but I feel au58 is right on the money....unfortuneatly. I did get a good price in the end though...and I am quite happy with it.
Thanks for looking.
