CCU, you apparently were not watching TV on June 17, 1974. That's when the very last time cliff divers were on Wide World of Sports. It was a foggy day that day, and the tide was very, very, very low.............
I live in an a mostly rural area with a lot of small towns and a lot of elderly people, quite a few of whom have been here for generations. I wouldn't mind being a "remote buyer" getting to spend someone else's money to look at and buy some cool old coins. I'll bet there are some around here which haven't seen the light of day for 50 years or more.
The big problem is that none of the dealers who seem to be "hiring" are located in a place to which I'd be willing to move. I could certainly see pursuing a "second career" in a few years when we can afford the pay cut...but not if it means moving to most of the places where they currently do business.
Are the Lustig or Maben positions still open? Does anyone know?

I have considered a career in coins. I would not want to become a dealer on my own. There are just too many risks there. You have to buy a large amount of inventory so you need thousands in start up funds. Then if the market suddenly turns south, you stand to lose thousands as your inventory declines in value. I would rather work for a large coin firm or one of the grading companies. I have been toying with the idea over the past year after I discovered how hard it is to find a permanent position as a PhD level scientist.
You really are onto something. I cannot understand why there is not a comprehensice system of cataloging, and then making that cataloge available via some on-line store. I have seen a few attempts and the whole this is clunky. I imagine an imaging process that scans the coin, gets a little info from the owner (like how much they paid) and tag the price to some markup they would be willing to take and the price stays indexed to the trends.
I have the design in my head and after 20 years of designing software for fortune 500 companies I really believe it is the way to do things. But there seems to be an inverse relationship between technical savvy and the size of the dealer.
Today? Depends on where I'd have to move to. Kind of deep into college right now. But like they all say.....money can change anything. I could see myself running a shop and enjoying the hobby still. If I lost a bit of interest in this hobby I have two more that can use some much needed attention (algae filled fish tanks).

Since the last time I responded to this I have taken my photo hobby into a fairly busy part-time business. It will probably be my only job in 5 years. I certainly don't plan to have to live off the money I make from it though.
Well I have been thinking about it for 30 years, but I love coins so much, my personal collecting would probably conflict with working as a numismatist but I would be a great one though cause I could promote new collectors, not just coins.

Personally, I am engaged in a business now where I interact with customers on a daily basis, after a career as an industrial technician on machinery for 30+ years, and have to say the opposite, I rather enjoy working with the public. Guess my stint for a few years as a really young man selling used cars on an A/R lot and dealing with the general public has returned to me in my middle age... not a whole lot of difference between cars and coins, " now sir, this is a coin you REALLY need, and it's probably a good idea to buy this one now as it will probably be higher in a few months..."

And hey, what's wrong with Florida??? My only complaint is I can't ride over the brigde into Philly and pick up some REAL cheesesteaks, or buy a real hoagie here without some idiot putting mayonaise on it...

Damn straight! I've only made 2. A bunch more shoulda gone in but alas, they wound up right on the edge.
One more roll of the ball and I'd have made at least 10 by now but the most thrilling was holing out in 2 on a Par 4.
