  • Is that a die crack in the date and mountain? I don't know much about them but have always loved them.

  • I like it a lot, but it looks from the picture that the underlying luster is weak. Looks like a weak strike too. I hope it is just the picture. You dont see many Stone Mountains rainbow toned like that. I will guess MS65. VERY nice coin.image

Arrived today.image Here is Waynes description of the coin:

Graded AU by PCGS but finding wear on this piece is difficult even on most of the high points of the coin; the coin is spectacularly toned in shades of gold, green and orange on the obverse and gold, green, lilac and lavender on the reverse; truly amazing color on both faces coupled with a popular, attractive design.

Nice coin, nice commemorative issue, and a nice place. I've been there two or three times.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

PS- I want your avatar Isabella!

PPSS- that Stone Mountain is fabulous. It would look nice in my AU Dansco set, too. image

I already have an AU which I bought for a song, but it is mostly white. Nothin' wrong with that, but yours is bodacious.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

  • Well Lee, maybe this baby should go in for Presidential Review? People have guessed up to 12 grades higher image

I feel exactly the same way, and I know I'm not the only one. I wonder if this is a backlash reaction to the crap the mint is putting out today and the expense required to buy it all.

  • Yes. I like Stone Mountains as well. I have two in my collection. I love them. As a matter of fact, we have a saying in our home area. It says simply, that unless you have a Stone Mountain in your collection, you're not a coin collector. Don't think we really enforce it, but it has a nice charm to it. Everyone seems to have one in their collection.

Many of the gorgeous toned gems that are encapsulated today came from a hoard of SM's that were housed in original
cards from the NY committee for the sale of the coin.

This was nearly 20 years ago, but I imagine that I handled 100-200 of the coins that were packaged in 5 piece holders. They were spectacularly toned. Most of the were sold to Jack Han**ck of GA, who has sinced passed away, much too young.

Would you believe that the machine would not let me spell Jack's last name properly????

That is a nice looking Stone Mountain and I too find it hard to believe that it is graded AU55. I have a Stone Mountain that grades PO01. It has no date and is still a nice looking coin.

Great looking coin! I thought it would have graded higher too!
