Interesting Silver Dollar hoard coming in

I had quite a conversation with a gentleman today who related the following story. This gentleman's grandfather supposedly had a lot of silver dollars. No one in the family had seen them, but he said he had them. He owned a business here in Utah back in the 1920's and 30's and claimed that he saved them when they came in through the store. Well, 8 years ago grandpa dies well into his 90's. No sign of any silver dollars is ever found. Everybody just assumes grandpa sold them (if he ever really had them). Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. Grandpa's house is still in the family and they are doing a major remodel. Under the floorboards of the house they find a vault. After they pry it open, they find just over 3,000 silver dollars!

After the holidays we are going out to appraise (and hopefully buy) them.

    That sounds like a good hoard. Original silver dollars, if what they're saying is true.

    Neat! I'm glad the family didn't miss out on Grandpa's stash. Looking forward to hearing the results.

    New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    They are probably fine environmentally--you have a nice dry climate. Bet there are a lot of 21's. Please let us know what you find. 3000 WOW! PS: Used to live in Utah--Hill AFB i(Ogden) in the 60's (I'm an old guy) Had no idea there was coin shop in Saint George--I travel that way every so often--will stop by to see you!

    I agree with the previous posters; every time I see your sigline, I wish I'd known before you had a store in St George. I was stationed at Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls MT from 1998 to 2004 and drove I-15 four times going back home to San Diego to visit family.

    That sounds awesome. If the coins were pulled from circulation at the store he worked at, most might be more common and circulated, but searching for varieties and better dates will keep your busy and most likely will yield quite a few happy surprises.

    I wouldn't care less if they were common and worn down. Finding a hoard is still finding a hoard!!

    Drooling. Wish I could could be there to see the unveiling. It would be so much fun to see what dates are there. I imagine a lot of "S" MM's and "CC" MMS's. I wouldn't be surprised to fund some higher grade keys in the vault.
