EBAY Scammers ARRESTED BY CHICAGO FEDS
The U. S Federal attorney in Chicago made 5 arrests today nabbing some of the EBAY . scammers These scammers it is charged , with ties to Romania, scammed 2,000 EBAYERS for over 5 MILLION $$$.
The most common scam was .......you guessed it........2nd chance offers on EBAY.
This type of negative publicity and poor EBay management , will further discourage would be bidders and lessen the pool of active EBAY bidders ..translating into less income for sellers .

or it might help to publicize the rampant nature of fraudulent second chance offers and encourage some people to trust ebay a bit more, now that they know "their government is watching out for them"
Ebay also profits from these frauds...look they got away with $5Million before they were stoped...how much money did that make for ebay!!!!!!
When people complained how many more sales did it take for them to halt their account or accounts!
$5million is a lot of money to turn a blind eye to!
<< <i>Ebay could be charged with aiding and abetting if they do not try in some way to stop it!!! They will be given a warning by the FEDS.

Very interesting point! EBAY should have dropped the 2nd chance offer option, until they could control the rampant fraud.
Unfortunately, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, a lot of people just cannot believe its actually a duck!
Also, I can ask, exactly what can Ebay do regarding false "Second Chance Offers"?

Ebay has sent out numerous messages to all members explaining how to verify second chance offers before accepting them. Do you use ebay at all?

Sorry but I think here you're exhibiting some of the inner attributes of the Christmas Turkey. Bad publicity is not in ebay's favor. Their business plan requires trust of buyers and they are aggressively addressing fraud. If you read your messages from them they explain how to deal with each of the scams you are likely to encounter and it becomes easy to spot them. I'm beginning to think that most ebay bashers don't acutally log on and use it but love to repeat unconfirmed or out of context "facts" they've heard elsewhere.
Sure there are suckers out there who fall for scams--not just on ebay. Taking advantage of the elderly (several of the victims in this article were obviously elderly) has been a big business for scammers forever. I just put an old schoolteacher friend in a rest home. In his last years of freedom he lost most of his coin collection and about 2/3 of his savings to scammers. And he never owned a PC and never visited the internet.

Let's ask some hard hitting questions like, "How come we are still paying tax to pay for the war between the states?" or "Exactly how many illegal imigrants do you intend to let in the US?" or "Why are we going back to the moon?"

<< <i>Time will tell how Ebay will be dealt with...yes they can give you all the how too's but how about stopping the fraud! Fraud is what they need to deal with on their auctions...fraud is their responsibility...They can warn you of it all they like...but when they take the fees attached to the auctions then they become liable! >>
So you're suggesting that Ebay return the fees to the scammers?
<< <i>How does ebay get any fees from fake second chance offer scams? They aren't conducted through their site at all. >>
Agree. But scams associated with hijacked accounts go through their site...thinking about it they probably get ripped off for the fees to so I'd guess the point is moot.
I agree, ebay likely gets no fees from scammers so ignore my last post.

So do you think funding of International Terriorisium could not be a tangled web on Ebay! You better think again!!!

Hmmmmmm ......many scammed people ....Maybe EBAY puts $$$$$ ahead of their customer's safety and pocket book .
<< <i>How does ebay get any fees from fake second chance offer scams? They aren't conducted through their site at all. >>
Actually, they don't, at least not in the type of scam I encountered. Real second chance offers are only made through eBay messages. The fraud I encountered with AGE sets, is fabricated to look authentic. It has ebay logos and looks virtually identical to ebay's visuals, including fonts, search buttons, etc. Some of the distinguishing characteristics are the eBay logos appear a little fuzzy. Some words may be mispelled. The seller is willing to sell you the product as a buy it now, but requests you send funds direct to a foreign bank. Payment is required by the next business day.
Be assured with this type of fraud, eBay gets nothing but a black eye.

blip on the radar screen. Ebay listings are up, and more things will be bought on Ebay than on Amazon this Christmas. Also on CNBC this afternoon they mentioned that there are more searches done on EBAY than on Google.
2nd chance offer scams are quite easy to avoid if you have the common sense not to click links in your emails. all real offers will be in your My Ebay page message box. Sadly a lot of folks lack the common sense it takes to be safe on the internet.

Yes, I've heard of several similar incidents with motorcycles. All of them were guys trying to buy a bike for about 1/3 what it was worth. --Jerry

And how, exactly, is eBay supposed to stop fake second chance offers and phishing schemes? Buy up the entire internet and all the ISPs in the world?

Exactly! I think people are too hard on Ebay, and they do sincerely try and stop all the fraud the best they can, but there are a seemingly endless number of crooks and scammers out there in the cyber world and it's not all that easy.

Well Russ... the way to stop phony 2nd chance offers is to stop 2nd chance offers .Let me take this step farther.. Is it correct buusiness to offer an item for sale ...have a bidder get the winning bid , and then sell a 2nd identical item at a lower price to 2nd bidder ? I see this with some sellers .Why not offer 2nd item to winning bidder ?

I agree. Get rid of the feature. It's become pretty useless anyway. But, that wouldn't do anything about the phishers.

One the other day was an invoice for an item I supposedly bought and asked for payment via PayPal. I knew immediately it was not legitimate because I have no use for a CANON SUPER TELEPHOTO Lens for SLR (Retails for $2,000; supposedly won it for $59). I sent the message to PayPal and received confirmation that the invoice was not legitimate.
Many times the people who get scammed try to buy something cheap (like 25% of current market value). I can't blame people for wanting a bargain but if the bargain is ridiculously cheap, it may end up costing you BIG TIME.
