Huh. Hell yes, it qualifies... that's textbook "circulation cameo" at its best!

They're not in the Cladiator Collection any longer but definitely qualify for the circulation cameo designation.

There's something about Becky's 1812 half that really appeals to me. I just love circulated coins with that look.

Well, sure, it's eye appeal, but eye appeal takes many forms. This is just one form of eye appeal.

Well, it doesn't quite qualify, though there is some nice contrast between the red X and the white box behind it. image

(Edit- the pic is showing now. Can't see much contrast between the fields and the portrait, but that could just be the way the picture is lit.)

Mike- a perfect CircCam trio, there! image

I think Tom (Casey) nailed it with that Barber dime!!

I have been calling it faux cameo, but I like your term better, Rob.

A more subtle version is the peripheral rim darker toning w/ medium to light devices in circulated silver. Here are couple of Barber halves that fit the bill in the spectrum of 'circ. cameo':

Great idea for a thread, Hope it keeps going like your UNO one ...

Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.

I forgot to come back to this thread and post the pic of that quarter. It's my icon now as well, but I never get tired of looking at it.

Check out this Bust quarter I just saw on the BST forum, for sale by Dennis Tarrant ("numisma").

If that ain't CircCam, I don't know what is! Black-and-white CircCam!

(I post this as a nice example of the phenomenon, and I don't mind giving Dennis a little plug in the process, since I've done business with him and he gets my wholehearted approval.)

I'm attempting a set of classic commems with this look, I honestly think they look nicer and the design detail is easier to see with a little dirt and grime in the fields. How can you not love a coin like this?

  • I found a nice example of a cameo seated dime on ebay while digging around for seated quarters... not mine but I did buy a seated quarter from this seller. Man I love that dark toning.
