Is it appropriate to ask a fellow collector, of the friendly persuasion, what they paid for a coin i

you may want to but it in the future? Is this crossing the line, or taking advantage of a friendship, for the possibility of adding a special piece at a special price?

I'd say that asking a fellow collector what they paid for a coin is fairly rude. At any rate what they paid should have no affect on what you should pay. That is determined by the market.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

If my motivation was to buy (not "but") the coin, either I wouldn't ask, or I'd ask, but disclose my reason for doing so.

In confidence, I would without hesitation tell a friend how much a paid for a coin. I would not tell a stranger.
  • I think it's all how it's asked. I see nothing wrong with a politley asked, "would you mind if I asked what about you paid for it."
Everything I write is my opinion.

    Looking for alot of crap.
  • OK. Hey stman, what'd you pay for that beautiful 55 quarter with the deep rainbow toning?

i think everyone would agree that it is best done in private and with a little tact as well.
  • I think for educational purposes it is okay. For example, if you are trying to learn more about a series and the pricing structures, then its okay as long as you keep that information private.

I think its ok because the current owner will have his/her asking price. If you think its too high then move on.

But what does this have to do with "butting" it? image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I'm in agreement with RYK on this one.
  • Would you ask him how much he paid for his new TV? His recent vacation? His new Buick with the crushed velour seats, AM/FM radio and rear window defogger?

This one? You want a story, or the truth?

  • Thanks, just wanted to see it again. I'm going to spring for it someday, I swear. Nope, don't want to know, this series of threads was a spoof. But I've coveted your 55 for some time, and it just came to mind. But, if you have a story, do tell.

As you know 1955 is a tough year to find with any kind of attractive toning. I was attempting to put together the nicest set possible to find. I stepped up for this one, or I wouldn't have owned it. I have offered it for sale for a bit less than I paid for it with folks trying to talk me down.
Not for sale at this time. I go back and forth on it.

No story, just fact. Thanks for the good words. Oh, you like it? Price just went up!image

I like that 55 quarter a lot. And I think that it's no big deal if a friend asks another friend about the price of a coin. I think this culture is a little too uptight about money, and places too much importance on it...

  • that 55 has similar colors like my merc has.......

  • Hi Mr. Steven. Love your hair. How much did you pay for that coin? (Trying to be a bit more subtle as McBeth suggests, a little pre-business banter)
