Picked up a 1967 SMS today, the half was a black and white beauty, and is off to PCGS. Does the group think this quarter will go CAM?

    Probably.

It's a very nice one in either case.

I'm going to guess no, as the reverse cameo is too weak.

If the proof buffalo discussion in another thread says anything about my grading ability, it's a for sure DCAM. image Take care...Mike

Voted yes but the reverse is very borderline.

That's a nice coin, but I don't see enough contrast to get a cam. I've seen coins with more contrast that didn't get one.

You are also dealing with a 1967 SMS coin. That year the quality was virtually on a par with Proof coinage. Finding exceptional pieces was not as hard as it was for the 1965 SMS sets.

Not enough on the reverse in the wings close to the body.

No IMO the reverse cameo is too weak.

  • Today, no...I think PCGS has a new grader or something and they are hammering everything I sent about a month or two ago.

4 Months back, it would have cam'd.

Probably not, due to the weak frost on the reverse and maybe even the hazy mirrors on the obverse. If the haze were removed with a quick bath, the contrast between the fields and the devices might become more pronounced and increase the chances of receiving the designation. Bathing hazed over SMS coins is riskier than bathing hazed over proof coins. Some times a bath will help, sometimes it does not help or hurt and sometimes it hurts alot.

How about posting a picture of the half?
