Ugliest coin worn, but looks great in uncirculated

What coin do you think looks bad when worn, but looks nice when uncirculated? Me, I don't like worn indian cents. They look EXTREMELY nice when uncirculated, but I really don't care for them worn.

Draped Bust coins looks great in any condition, same for Seated coins, except silver dollars.

What are your opinions?

  • Worn Ikes are just plain ugly, but a nice MS67+ example can look great.

    3 cent Nickels

I think they look very attractive in uncirculated but when their worn I don't really care for them that much.

I think the biggest spread from good to
mint state is the Walking Liberty half.

  • I'll say clad Washington quarters. The wear always looks "dishonest," scratched, corroded, but never the nice kind of "pocket wear" that shows up on silver. Uncirculated, I think the early clad looks good.

Liberty nickels. So ugly when they are worn, but I've come to appreciate a nice MS example.

There used to be a lot of these with nice honest wear but now days these tend to be
hidden under layers of the kind of beatings coins take when they spend more time in
counters and machines than in pockets.

There are still a few with attractive wear though, like the silver issues, they aren't espec-
    ially attractive when they're worn.

Middle Date Large Cents... they look like crap in AG3-VG condition.... but a nice example in AU-MS condition is really something to behold.

  • I actually like the New Jersey State quarter in UNC.

I saw one the other day worn so that the reverse looked like a plate of gray worms on the back. UGLY

The Standing Liberty quarter. I think the coin is butt ugly in any grade VF and lower, and I don't care much for EF graded pieces because I view them as overgraded. As a young collector I was really amazed when I saw a Mint State Standing Liberty quarter for the first time. You could still find them in circulation in the early 1960s, and many of them still had dates. Sadly I found most all of them to be pretty ugly.

I really like BU walker halves but don't particularly care for the circilated ones because of that flat line that develops right down the middle of Liberty.

I am going to agree with Dorkgirl. "Smooth" Liberty nickels are just nasty, but a nice MS or Proof can knock your socks off.

The Sacagawea dollar is beyond butt-ugly when worn but it is not even worthy to be mentioned. :þ

I think that the draped bust series wear extremely well, even in lower circulated grades. But the classic head large cent has the most homely visage ever put on a US coin and is only attractive in AU or mint state grades.

The Sac is the most beautiful US coin since the walking liberty half. It is an aesthetic triumph.
