I got my 20th Ann. SAE set today but I'm afraid to open the package...OK I made up my mind.
I don't know if I should or can still send it in to PCGS. I've read a lot about people getting the First Strike slabs but I can't figure out if I'm too late or not. BUT, I really want to open the box and look at my set.
What should I do?
What should I do?

If you want the 20th Anniversary label you can't open the box. If you don't care about the label then go ahead and look at your prize.

You can always see if you can trade the one eligble for FS to someone for a small profit + an already opened set.
Do you want the coins, or do you want to sell them. I assume you want the coins, in which case you should open the box and enjoy em...

1. As long as the box stays sealed and has a postmark by Nov 11, All three coins will get a first strike and 20th anniv. label if you pay for it.
2. If you open the box and look at your set then only the reverse proof can qualify for the first strike designation.

Not true about the not true:
Direct from PCGS customer service:
"The shipment date on the shipping label must be October 24th or earlier to get all 3 coins 20th Anniversary First Strike, or November 11th or earlier to get the Proof and Reverse Proof 20th Anniversary First Strike."
If you want First Strike on all 3 the date shipped needs to be October 24th or earlier. It most definately qualifies for the Proof and Reverse Proof FS but we are not sure about the others. Unfortunately the date on the outside of your box does not make sense.
<< <i>The package says "Ship Date: 106300" whatever that means. >>
Is there any stamps on the outside of the box that has a date on it?

The 10-24 date is for the gold sets, 11-11 is the cutoff date for the ASE sets.
The box must be sealed as you received it and the date must be 11-11 or earlier to qualify for first strike. After 11-11 they will still qualify for 20th anniversary designation but the box must be sealed.
It is $10.00 per coin extra for first strike designation, and if the boxes are returned $2.00 per set.
Here is the full text for the first strike qualifications on Silver. 24th is the cut off date for all three to qualify end of story. As we mentioned before the Proof coins will still qualify until the 11th the UNC coin DOES NOT.
"First Strike designation for 3pc Silver 20th Anniversary sets:
• To get the 20th Anniversary First Strike designation, the sets must come to PCGS in the original government boxes they were shipped in.
• The box must be unopened.
• The shipment date on the shipping label must be October 24th or earlier to get all 3 coins 20th Anniversary First Strike, or November 11th or earlier to get the Proof and Reverse Proof 20th Anniversary First Strike.
• Any opened boxes or sets shipped loose out of the government boxes DO NOT qualify for First Strike Except for the Reverse Proof Silver Eagle which qualifies until November 11th, 2006.
Any how, looks like the overall response is to not open the box. Submit it with the form and under the Variety put First Strike and maybe they will do all three. Depends on how strict they are as you could be a couple days late for the UNC.

My personal opinion is that, further down the road, the First Strike designation is not going to bring anymore $$$$ than the same coin in a regular PCGS holder. If you bought this coin with the intention of slabbing it and flipping it...then you outta get the FS designation because people are paying crazy money for it RIGHT NOW. Keep in mind, the general "coin public" out there is not far behind all of us board members in finding out what the First Strike designation really means (or in this case DOESN'T mean
What if you DIDN'T open your coins and your reverse proof has a noticeable mark on it...or haze on it...and it is returned to you in a PR68DCAM holder. Then where does that put you? You wasted the grading fees.
If you open the package up (like I will in December or whenever the heck mine arrive) then you will be able to see what coins you are about to submit. It absolutely boggles my mind that people are sending these coins in without even looking at them. These things are going to be selling for a lot of money down the road (at least the RevProofs) and, IMHO, no one will give a darn whether they are in a regular PCGS holder or a "First Strike" holder...
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
My two cents.
P.S. What does your father think?

<< <i>If there isn't a shipping date that anyone can figure out, like my package, how does anyone know when it was shipped and if it is too late or not.
There is a packing slip inside the box that will have a date on it. Unfortunately only they will know.
As far as the previous post goes he is right about the first strike, down the road more people may catch on and the prices will come in line with the non first strike.
On the other hand there is still a reason to not open it. You can get the 20th Anniversary label for no extra charge but the box must not be opened otherwise only the reverse proof qualifies.
The rev proof and the proof CAN get the first strike still.
So do what you want. Open it play with it, and if the rev proof is that nice, you can still send it in and get the grade and fs designation on it.
The rev proof is the clear cut winner in the set, so you do not have much to lose if you do open it.
Remember the best you can get on the unc. is a ms-69 so will it really matter?
I have a nother 5 sets coming and I can't wait to open them, and enjoy them.

P.S. What does your father think?
Samuel just logged off so I'll put in my 2 cents worth since I was asked.
I think he should enjoy his coins and let the speculators worry about shipping dates and have told him as much BUT....
I think Fats hit the nail on the head as far as what I think he should do.
He was so excited about ordering these with some money he's saved up, and has been waiting with baited breath to get them and now all this plastic speculating has taken all the fun out of it. Kind of bugs me to be honest.
Im curious what'll be done
As to whether it is worth it or not, that is a tougher call. Some coins are coming in at 68, at that grade they will not pay for the grading fees. The odds of a 70 are slim, but the payoff can be large. Depends on how lucky a person feels.

I can quit collecting anytime I want to.....I just don't want to!
<< <i>Don't do anything, sit on that unopened box of ASE's and wait a year or so. You may be the only one with an unopened box of ASE sets.

Given the weird postmark, keeping the sealed box may be the worst of all worlds. Early shipped sets are selling at a premium. Without a postmark that shows this, this set will be no better than all the tens of thousands of sets that will ship in December. With the weird postmark, this sealed set will most likely be worth less after 11/11. Besides after the gold set hoopla about sealed boxes, I'd bet that lots of folks will keep sealed sets. Some people will order extra single sets just to do this.

<< <i>This plastic craze is a real shame. Don't be afraid Samuel, open your box and enjoy your coins. That is what real collectors do. The coins themselves will be the basis of value in the future, not the plastic with a silly marketing phrase that hold no numismatic value. >>
very well said.. and all this plastic designation bs on brand new coins is a real shame indeed.. the coins are what they are
I don't see a problem with sending the thing in and asking for the First Strike designation.
Personally, I would not hesitate for 1 second because its all just a big gamble which could pay off for you.
It also appears that you only ordered 1 set so you do not appear to be a speculator with regard to making a killing on these so if you do not want to take that gamble then open it up, if you want to take the chance then send it in.

I share your concern.
<< <i>I still don't know what to do.
They are your coins, Sam. You bought them to enjoy them, yes? So who cares what a TPG says, or what silly designations they might or might not recieve!
I think you should open them, enjoy them, display them- anything! They look really nice in the box the Mint sends them in from pictures I have seen. From your dad's post above, I guess that you bought them because you liked them. Don't let anyone tell you what you should do with them (myself included), just do what you want to do with them.

If one looks extra nice I can always send it in to be graded later. But I'm going to enjoy them NOW!
