Reports of milk spotting on 20th Ann. SAE's - How come the US Mint...

....has this Milk Spot problem? Can anyone post an example of this happening on a Brittania, Kangaroo, Panda, Maple leaf, etc? If you can find an example I'd like to see it.

If not, knowing the past problems SAE's have had with milk spots, why hasn't the Mint looked into how other mint's produce their silver bullion coins so that this problem is either reduced or hopefully eliminated. image

Maybe that's a question you should pose in CoinWorld of Numismatic News....where they do have the ear of the USMint at times?
Would be interesting for the Mint to get pressed on this in public.....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I agree with you and feel that it's shameful that they have let this problem carry on for so long.

If I'm not mistaken, haze and milk spots are different animals. One is on the surface the other IN the surface.

The same way that you did here, only by snailmail or email.

  • I think all silver eagles will spot! Especially when they are slabbed. I just opened up 3 different ebay winnings for auctions that were from "Spot Free" coins as advertised and guess what? Yep all three had spots!!! Why do ebayers lie about the spots! I ask them "any spots" They say no spots, perfect coins and when I get them SPOTS, Spots, & SPOTS! And these spots are with the naked eye I mind you!

Hi Mitch. I personally believe the problem is in the drying process of the metal strips. After the wash and rinse they are improperly dried. They sit there and air dry instead of forced air drying. I might be wrong as I've never witnessed the process from start to finish in making these strips for coinage, but these spots remind me of my own car after washing it at the car wash and not drying with a chamois or a towel. Ugly little white spots appear on the finish.

    Any other ideas ?

    Joe.

If the strips are rinsed with distilled/deionized water they shouldn't spot. The spots on your car come from hard water. I wouldn't submit any of these ASE sets unless myself or PCGS was to dip them first. Kinda hard for me to do it if they need to be submitted unopened for the FS designation.

If I'm not mistaken, with milk spots, what ever the problem is, happens before the strike, and therefore the spot is struck into the surface of the coin. which like a time bomb ticks away and then one day appears and is not removeable.

If that's not accurate I'm open for clarification. image

I do not know the root cause, but I do know that it does not happen to all ASE's. I have seen many examples posted here on the board. I do not have any on my ASE's. This seems very strange to me.. since it is an issue so widely discussed. I have again looked very carefully at ALL my sets (three) and random pieces... NO milkspots. Am I just lucky? or is there some further 'trigger' that causes a latent chemical deposition to 'appear'? With the amount of attention this receives, I would think someone would subject an example to chemical analysis to at least begin the chain of discovery. Cheers, RickO
