Crackling new 1913 Type 2 Buffalo nickel

This coin arrived in the mail today and I'm very pleased. The luster is terrific, the strike solid, the reflectivity just explosive. Care to venture a grade?

VERY VERY nice. I like the streaks in it!

Im streak-neutral. my best example is in my dansco and it's got those stripes which Ive only seen in the buffalo. it's just an odd feature....

Very gorgeous buffalo! I love the toning. image

Really excellent lustre for a type two as well. A fine reverse strike, too, I might add! The obverse is not fully struck up, though, I'm looking just above the braid.

I really like the EPU clash under the Indian's chin! image

    Grade? Hmmmmmm

I'd be comfortable with calling it a very high end 65, shot 66.

    Lovely lovely buffalo!

    Thanks for sharing. image

Amanda, I guess I'm not seeing what you're seeing. To me the aspect above the braid looks pretty good for 13 T2. The knot itself looks excellent. Maybe I'm missing something.

In the hair, where it looks a little rough, I have read that this is because the metal wasn't fully pushed up *all* the way into the dies, to create flowlines. Of course, judging from an image is very difficult. It is a very nice excellent strike, regardless. image

  • Beautiful toning. Looks like a nice 65 to me from the pics, but PCGS might give it a 64 these days. My 1913 ty2 I thought was for SURE a lock 66. PCGS handed it back with a 65 and a free pack of kool aid. Mmmmmmm....... purple........

    I like it, I'd give it a 66, Pcgs gave it a 65.

Ebay. I've gotten a number of extremely nice buffs, often undergraded, from this seller.

For help in arriving at a conclusion regarding grade. This also is a 13-T-2 Buff in a PCGS slab.

Please forgive the scratches on the holder.

    Hope this helps. image

Warren, if that slabbed Type 2 your showing is MS63, the coin I've posted could be a bit higher.
The most obvious things to me is the lettering and hair detail on the obverse, and certainly the buffalo's head and shoulder on the reverse. The coin I'm showing also is screaming bright and lustrous--which is not to say your MS63 is not. It's hard to tell through the plastic.

Right. I took the pix on the fly I really didn't make much effort to show it in a bright light.

What I was trying with is that area in his hair that leads a lot of people to think a coin may have rub or not even MS.

Knowing your tastes and how good your eye is, provided there are no unseen issues I'd say that the piece is a minimum 65 and in all likelihood a 66 if not a 67. image

In the circles I travel, there's no such thing as a 67. It's just a rumor.

I like your high contrast pics. Buffs look good like that.

  • Should be a lock at MS65. The hair is a tad weak above the ribbon, as stated before, but only a tad...
Great eye appeal. Could get a 66.

    Looks like a solid 65.

FYI: Buffnut's coin has just about the best strike for a T2 I've ever seen. I don't know if it's the way he photographs his coins or what, but most of his pieces show amazing detail.
