Reference Books - Definitive Guides on Each Series.

I thought this would be a good idea for an informative thread. I will compile a complete list of reference guides for all U.S. Coins at the top of this thread from the subsequent posts. It'll serve usefull to those who wish to have a complete reference library for all U.S. Coins.

I updated the list and also added it to our website. Numismatic Literature

Colonial Coins

Early Coins of America by Sylvester Crosby

In addition, some of the significant auction catalogs are as informative or more so than the references:

The 1979 - 1980 Garrett collection catalogs by Bowers (three volumes)

The 1983 Roper Collection catalog by Stack's - arguably the finest and most complete colonial type set ever assembled.

The 1987 - 1988 Norweb collection catalogs by Bowers (three volumes), and 2006 Norweb Washingtonia volume by Stack's

The 1996 Eliasberg collection catalog by Bowers volume 1 (a limited offering, but many high grade pieces)

The 2003 - 2007 Ford Collection catalogs by Stack's

    Cool! image

I think a very good resource for the Indian Head (or Buffalo) Five Cent Piece is David Lange's The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels.

  • Brandon, heck of an undertaking! Not much in print in my niche, Ikes and SBAs but if you're including journals, maybe add the article I wrote with David Golan on Full Talon SBAs, May 2006 issue of NUMISMATIST. Rob

United States Pattern Coins: Complete Source for History, Rarity, and Values By J. Hewitt Judd, M.D. is an excellent resource, as well.

Also, A Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents By Richard Snow covers those coins very well.

    Brandon,

You've got this "Davis, David J., Logan, Russell J., Lovejoy, Allen F., McCloskey, John W., Subjack, William J., Early United States Dimes 1796-1837" listed under half dimes but it should be listed under dimes.

    (note the slight date difference)

I think Breen's work deserves mention for the earlier dates -- it is a 850+ page reference with very good B&W photos that covers 1793 to 1814.

    Lincoln cents:

The Lincoln Cent Doubled Die, John Wexler, 1984
The Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents, John Wexler and Kevin Flynn, 1996
The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents, David W. Lange, 2005
The RPM Book: Second Edition, Lincoln Cents, James Wiles, 1997
The Standard Guide to the Lincoln Cent, Dr. Sol Taylor, Fourth Edition, 1999
Looking Through Lincoln Cents, Charles D. Daughtrey, Second Edition, 2005
A Detailed Analysis of Lincoln Cent Varieties, Volume 1, Billy G. Crawford, 2004(?)

    Jefferson Nickels:

The Best of the Jefferson Nickel Doubled Die Varieties, Second Edition, John A. Wexler.

Note: Because most Lincoln cent books cover the entire series, it would be difficult to find a book that splits the two sub-sets. In fact, I don't know of any except those written prior to 1959. It would be best to combine the two categories into one for numismatic reference purposes.

    Thanks, Richie
... for mentioning David Lawrence's "Complete Guides" to Barber Dimes, Quarters, and Half Dollars. These remain the definitive guides in this series, even 15 years later, although they are sadly out of print. Kevin Flynn's variety books pale in comparison to these.

Also, I'm surprised no one else mentioned Wayne Miller's Morgan & Peace Dollar Textbook.

ccex, yes, the David Lawrence series is out of print. Ever try to buy his Barber Dime book? Very difficult to find! I think the Barber Quarter book went to a second edition, so it's a bit more available. And I don't know about the Barber Half book's availability.

Large Cents - catalogs but references nonetheless...

robinson brown collection of large cents 1793–1857 Superior Galleries—West Hollywood, September 30–October 1, 1986 - as noted in lot 138 of Kolbe # 52 Mendelson Library Sale: Virtually a reference work in itself.

the jack h robinson collection of large cents and half cents - Superior Galleries—Beverly Hills, January 29–30, 1989 - the natural complement to the above.

I read this back in 1998. WAY too much attention is paid to only the horn-there are other parts of the coin that are much more notorious (or should be) than that one feature alone. The horn NEVER should have been the key and basically the only determinant of the grade, but this was written in stone when the old Brown and dunn grading guide was accepted as the standard in the late '50's. The 1918-S is THE worst regular issue in the series when it comes to strike, but most of the coins that lack detail later on in the series show weakness more due to worn, eroded dies than to strike alone.

Great List! Thanks for doing that!

The one book I would add to it is: 'United States $3.00 Gold Pieces' by Q. David Bowers & Doulas Winter. It is such a wonderfully produced volume, that I believe any coin lover would enjoy reading it, regardless of their feelings for this particular niche series.
