I’ll add that the three “Renaissance of American Coinage” books cover the 1905-1922 period in considerable detail and much greater depth than any of the specialty type volumes. They focus on origin, design and initial production, including proofs, but intentionally do not treat the coins by date/mint/variety. (The 1909-1915 book will be out later this year.)

Two excellent references from the ANS available at the David Brown Book Co:

"America's Silver Coinage, 1794-1891" Coinage of the America's Conference 1986 - Leaman/Gunnet half dollar edge die emission study, Logan edge mirror design, Hilt "Group Strength", McCloskey, Davis, Subjack, Newman...

"America's Gold Coinage" COAC 1989 - includes the reference for Classic Head Gold Half Eagle die varieties, McCloskey.

Bass II catalog, B&M - die variety reference for Classic Head Quarter Eagles, also on-line.

The ANS books are the best $15 you will ever spend!
Robert Scot: Engraving Liberty - biography of US Mint's first chief engraver

How about adding to the list good online sources for locating/purchasing numismatic literature?

    For colonials -

    General References:

Early Coins of America by Sylvester Crosby
    Redbook
    Breen Encyclopedia

In addition, some of the significant auction catalogs are as informative or more so than the references:

The 1979 - 1980 Garrett collection catalogs by Bowers (three volumes)
The 1983 Roper Collection catalog by Stack's - arguably the finest and most complete colonial type set ever assembled.
The 1987 - 1988 Norweb collection catalogs by Bowers (three volumes), and 2006 Norweb Washingtonia volume by Stack's
The 1996 Eliasberg collection catalog by Bowers volume 1 (a limited offering, but many high grade pieces)
    The 2003 - 2007 Ford Collection catalogs by Stack's

There are specific references and additional catalogs for many colonial specialties, from Massachusetts silver to New Jersey coppers to French Colonial coins, but for the purposes of this thread these are recommended general references.

Since this was posted the updated, expanded volume of "Treasure Hunting Buffalo Nickels," now titled "The Autoratative Reference on Buffalo Nickels" has been published. Anyone interested can contact me at coinquest_sixtyone @ yahoo.com

Another one for Three Cent Nickels is "The Ultimate Guide to U.S. Three Cent Nickels, 1865 to 1889," Allan Gifford, 2004.
  • An oldie but a goody that I hadn't seen before. Much better than 30-40 threads about one subject. Thanks Brandon.

    Poorguy,

Replace Treasure Hunting Buffalo Nickels by John Wexler, Kevin Flynn, and Ron Pope with the newest edition titled The Authoritative Reference on Buffalo Nickels by the same authors, 2007. I'm not sure why they changed the title, but it is the same book, only MUCH better with regards to images and background information.

    A couple additions:

For Lincoln cent Matte Proof Lincolns, I would add Kevin Flynn's new book:

Lincoln Cent Matte Proofs by Kevin Flynn (March 2009)

Regarding Indian cents, Rick Snow's Attribution Guide consists of 4 volumes:

1856-1858 Attribution Guide, Volume 1, By Richard Snow
1859-1869 Attribution Guide, Volume 2, By Richard Snow
1870-1889 Attribution Guide, Volume 3, By Richard Snow
1890-1909 Attribution Guide, Volume 4, By Richard Snow

and this book is now in a 2nd edition:

A Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian Cents (2nd ed. ) by Richard Snow

If you want to know about the new coinage designs from 1907 through 1921, the three Renaissance of American Coinage volumes ( 1905-1908, 1909-1915, 1916-1921) will answer your questions and a lot more. They also include a large amount of material on how the mint operated during that time, proofs, patterns, destruction of US pattern hubs biographies of mint directors, etc., etc.

the Master List of Web Sites includes this thread.

I thought it'd be a good idea to crosslink it since good web sites are useful tools to use with the books.

The list hasn't been edited since 2007

Would people keep posting new books to this thread?

Also, since poorguy isn't around much, and stone may not return, would there be objections to me or another volunteer taking over these lists?

Some super books listed. A great help for all levels of collectors.

For Early Commemoratives I would add:

An Illustrated History of U.S. Commemorative Coinage, by Don Taxay, 1967

    and

The Authoritative Reference on Commemorative Coins, 1892 - 1954, by Kevin Flynn, 2008.

Roger Burdetts Renaissance series has some great info.

As a general history of all coinage:

Numismatic Art in America, Aesthetics of the United States Coinage, Vol I or II, by Cornelius Vermeule.

I've gone thru most of this thread ; where is the updated
list? Have the Bowers/Red Book series been added. I think
A.J. Taraszka wrote only a book about early $10 gold. Will
we be able to print a copy of this list? I hope that MsMorrisine
does take over this project. This is a great idea but I have
    very few computer skills.

    Eisenhower Dollars
    - Collectible Ike Varieties - Facts, Photos, and Theories Ezerman et al
    - Little Book of Collectible Eisenhower Dollars Sanders et al
    - IDDD Eisenhower Double Die Top 25 and RPM Varieties Kalantzis
    - The Authoritative Reference on Eisenhower Dollars Wexler et al
    - CONECA attribution guide to Eisenhower dollar die varieties. Wiles

As with any book, if the subject matter is a topic of ongoing investigation and study, then the information in the book could become superceded by new information. Knowledge of the Eisenhower dollar continues to evolve. Besides the books above, go to the Ike Group website (please peruse the DIVa tab) and the Ike Group forum to round out the information that you seek about Eisenhower dollars.
