Which coin/photograph do you like better? And how much better? (Crusty Charlotte $5's inside)

RYKRYK Posts: 35,801 ✭✭✭✭✭
Below are two different coins of the same date.

1. Which coin do you like better?

2. How much more would you pay for the nicer (ie. higher-graded) coin (as a %)?

3. Which coin do you think grades higher?

4. Which photograph do you like better?

5. (optional) Guess the grades of A. and B.

I will post the "answers" and background information for both coins later today, and some of the answers might surprise you. image

    1. Which coin do you like better?

I like the smooth look of B.

    2. How much more would you pay for the nicer coin (as a %)?

Define nicer (I would expect to pay less for B, since it's a lower grade coin, but I prefer it to A).

    3. Which coin do you think grades higher?

    A.

    4. Which photograph do you like better?

B, photo A is cropped too tight.

    5. (optional) Guess the grades of A. and B.

    I dunno.

    1. I like the sharpness of coin A a little better, although it's more chattery than coin B. Edge goes to A, but you can send me either.
    2. Not too much, as they are probably quite close.
    3. Probably coin B, since isn't quite as rough as A.
    4. B
    5. A: AU53, B: AU55

    The second one.

A lot more - maybe double.

    The first one.

A is an AU55, B is a 50. But numerical grades tell a small part of the story IMO.

At first glance I like B better, and A looks like the higher grade, though, a lesser coin.

My preference is coin A of the two.....

The grades look pretty similar, knowing how the grading services grade I will guess B is higher.....

Grade estimate would be XF area.....

    1. I like Coin B better. It seems to have a little more color than Coin A and does not look as dull. It might just be the pics, though.
    2. I would pay up to a 20% premium for the nicer coin (not knowing the values of these). Anything more than that, the coin would have to be really nice (again, to hedge my bets, I really don't know a lot about C $5's).
    3. I think Coin A grades higher, even though Coin A seems to have more chatter just looking at the pics. Coin B seems to be worn smoother in certain parts (I don't think it is strike). They are probably pretty close in grade, though.
    4. I like the picture of Coin B better. It seems to have more life than Coin A.
    5. Grade guesses: Coin A-- AU-53; Coin B-- AU-50.

    1) A just looks better. It has chatter but the lack of detail kills B (AU55 vs. XF40)
    2) they are nice nice nice... I'd pay a premium for either.
    3) if B grades higher, then A is bodybagged for cleaning
    4) I like picture A better
    5) Re: Line #1

    4. B, A looks a bit too harshly lit for a circ.

    1. I like coin A better. It's got that greenish look from a high silver content, something I think is cool for southern gold coins made from local sources.

    2. I do not follow the markets for these, but I would guess 10-20 percent?

    3. I think coin A grades a little higher than B

    4. Coin B has a more pleasing photograph

    5. A = AU 55 and B= AU 50

    I think. image

    B- My guess pcgs au53

    Here's my take:

    1. I like BOTH. image I like the strike and detail of A, and I like the color and surface of B. Both appear nice and original, and I could see owning either (or both) in my collection. Both are coins that are nicer than 90+% of the southern gold half eagles that come to the market.

    2. I purchased B at a local coin show this summer. A is currently on the market, and I paid about 20% less than the offering price of A.

    3. I think that A grades AU-55+and B grades AU-50/53.

    4. I like BOTH. B was taken by my favorite photographer, and A was taken by an up-and-coming photographer who has trained with the photographer of B.

    5. Both coins are in NGC AU-55 holders.

    Thanks for playing. image

    1. I like A better, the weak strike of B turns me off.
    2. I have no idea the relative value.
    3. B grades higher.
    4. Both pictures look like they have been oversharpened when being reduced in size, but I prefer B.
    5. They both look to be XF/AU coins.

I don't collect C mint gold yet image will prob do D next

    Is A an above average strike for a 1852 C $5?

Prices don't jump up too much til MS63 so I could see A as possible upgrade but not B

nice coins, very informative topic, thanks!
