I hosed up a proof SAE
I just bought a 2006 Proof SAE for the hell of it recently and was taking pics of it. It had a big pube on the obv and some dusty bits. I figured that I could blow those off with a canned air thingy. Well, that was a disaster. Now there are spots all over the thing. Got the pube off though.
So, how do I clean it up? brillo? acetone? alcohol? Or am I just SOL?

Now I know why they don't trust me with raw modern proofs.
I've heard before NOT to use compressed air...for exactly the reasons you mentioned.
Note to self....keep proofs away from Mark....far far away. He enjoys them too much and then tries to blow them off

Can it be fixed? or is it a pocket piece? or toning experiment?
Did you show it to Anita Hill?
Edited to add: Quattro beat me to the punch line.
Only canned air we use is called "Spray Anyway" or something like that... it's a 360 degree can that rarely ever spits...
But if you can't get that... avoid shaking the can before using it and avoid using it when the can is low on air... also keep the can upright to help prevent spitting...

<< <i>No joke, one of my SAE coins has a hair in it too! I thought it was a crack in the plastic holder, because the shipment was all shaken when I got it this morning, but everyone here at work agrees that it is a long brown hair.... I need advice too! I totally would have used compressed air when I got home today..
Has that coin been to Mgoodm3 yet? Maybe he was just happy to see you

Hope everything comes out alright...don't ya just hate when you think you know what your doing and then really screw things up?
ie: I swear my wife's mixer was rotating backwards, I took it apart and rewired it "right" then threw it in the trash before she go home.

-a little soap and water ought to do the trick. For the coin, I'd use acetone.
If that doesn't work, try MS70 cut 3:1 water/MS70 and stabilize with alcohol or acetone rinse.
If that doesn't work, a quick Jewelustre dip and then stabilize the surface.

Don't know the answer to your question, once 'tarnished' proofs are goners IMO.

<< <i>I would carefully use MS70 to remove the spots. Use a Qtip as directed on the MS70 directions. Carefully rinse with distilled water and then blow dry. Thats what i would do. >>
Try to avoid using the Q-tip if possible -- it can easily hairline proofs.

<< <i>The pube was way bigger than that one on her shoulder. It looked like a design element.
Just saw that.....where WAS this "pube" on the coin?
Maybe I don't want to know.......
