Depends on the coin.....moderns I would generally say no. Just a profile plastered on a planchet. Walkers & SLQ and most other 'classics' definately yes.

Some Modern commemoratives can definitely be classified as art, they are beautiful. then again, Some can be classified as cartoonish at best. Think clip art
LOL. Seriously, they are art in an odd way. Being mass produced, they tend to be in a way like lithograph prints. OTOH, there are aspects like toning that make a piece unique in an artistic way. As sculpture, proofs would be the artistic pinnacle of them. But I don't care for proofs. They and commemorative are non-coins in a way. I don't really see then as not coins, but they are not quite the same as business strikes. I think it is the history associated with them that is the draw for me and many (most?) others. For the US, the coins followed the ascent from a band of rebel colonies to the most sophisticated nation on earth. Older ones were handled by people who sacrificed with great uncertainty in the initial building of the nation, the westward expansion, ... Silver dollars are fascinating as one of the longest running scandals in our government, feverishly pumping them out by the billions for special interests with tremendous variation in quality. So many never went anywhere for a century. BRanch mint ones circulated. Same with gold. So they are portals to history and the natural obsessive set completion of an organized design (the art side) for me.

In some cases it's good art and in some cases it's bad art but designs are always important to me.
I prefer usually simplicity and lack of verbiage.
Everybody shhhhhhhhh!!!
