Smoebody wanted a report from Whitman/ATL?

Want a report? I was there Friday.
Maybe from a dealer standpoint it was a bust but from a collectors standpoint it was ok. 1 thing I liked about it admission was FREE! I must have been suspicious looking because I had to show I.D. and they wrote down my address before they would let me in.
Actually the most exciting part riding the big black dog hog on the Atlanta bypass (I-285). We're cruising along at 90 mph and all of a sudden 6 lanes of traffic comes to a dead standstill. Took me 1 hour to go 10 miles.
Wanted to do the lunch thing Friday but my rear tire was bad & killing my gas mileage; I had to stop for gas 4 times instead of 2, and missed my exit off 285 so I was running several hours late.

Plenty of both raw & certified material. Plenty of PCGS & NGC and some ANACS with the usual smattering of overgraded & AT junk in ICG & PCI & a few other 3rd worlders. ACG holders were strangely absent.
Saw lots & lots of Morgans, mostly common & semi keys, didn't see any true keys. A few toners & a few Proofs. Saw a 95 Proof but don't remember much about it. Saw a beautiful PCGS attributed 78 doubled arrows, think it might have been MS65 don't remember. Figured with the toning and VAM prem it was nothing I wanted so I didn't waste the dealers time by asking to see it. It had a strange dark wide color band from the periph up to Lib and the center was brilliant. I remember thinking if I posted it on the board everybody would say it was AT.
I forget his name but the guy with the High Rims & Oct $50 seemed disappointed that I was more interested in the 4 tab NGC holder than the coins themselves. Really neat slab, you can actually see the edge of the coin.
Stopped by PQDollars table, pulled my stash out and showed rkfish what pq dollars really look like. He had a nice selection of better dates.
Stopped by Legend's table to see if she wanted to fight, she was in a good mood and actually pleasant so we discussed a Proof Benson Barber Half I had in my pocket instead.
The big Anaconda snake looked hungry, threw him a few rabbits to hold him over till he got back to Dallas.
Ran across local boy & board member Robert Bruce from All American Coin Company, Pensacola Fl. He was busy selling a lady a Commem Set but we promised each other a beer back in Fla and I moved on.
Spied Eagle Eye & Coppercoins but it was late & they left before I got back around to their tables.
Checked out the King of Siam Set, never seen it before. The Proof 67 $ was a dissapointment, it looked like a cleaned, weak struck XF-45. The dime was killer though, it was the best one.
I was mostly looking for 97 material, which as expected was non-existent. Only saw 3 decent looking xx97 coins; a pretty toned 97-S PCGS 65 Morgan, an NGC AU 50 Bust $1, and a pretty 68 NGC Ultra Cam Proof 97 Barber ½, not to mention a skanky cleaned & retoned Barber 25¢ in an ANACS net holder, none of which really fit my collection and only asked to look at 2 coins. Would have loved to found a bullseye toned 97 Proof Morgan, had the jack in my pocket just in case, but no dice.

The dealers were unusually polite & friendly though which surprised me, maybe it was because they were big-name professional dealers instead of the flea market weasels I'm used to dealing with a @ the local shows. The dealers I talked to wanted to talk about motorcycles instead of coins, which was fine with me. Didn't know so many dealers were Harley riders. It was cold as crap up there in yankee land, about 60 degrees, compared to 80 degrees when I left Lower Alabama and I almost froze to death, good thing I took heavy gloves, long sleeve shirt & a jacket, but I had a nice time, which is what it's all about.

Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

285 is a nasty traffic road.

The Siam Set was cool from a historical standpoint. image

I hear that the Atlanta area freeways are getting to be like Los Angeles, a slow moving mess.

    Great show report.

Glad you made it home safe from "Hot''lanta image

285 is like a demolition derby most of the time....

Nice rep[ort. Thanks. It's knd of amusing that everybody mentions 285 in their replies. I made the mistake of going down to Atlanta a few weeks after the Dalton Show. 285 = NO Atlanta Shows for me.

In all seriousness, the traffic is an issue with collector attendance. The Galleria is a first class facility, but the I-285/I-75/US-41 area is not for the faint of heart. Many collectors around the region will gladly drive the 70 extra miles to the Dalton shows but will choose to not attend the closer Atlanta show because of the Traffic IMO.

Fatman, it's the same with the Houston Show. Why it is held every year at the Brown Center is a bummer. The one time it was held at Greenspoint Mall it was packed and easy to get to. I'm closer to the Houston show than any other. But the 3 + hours to get there and the 2+ back makes for a mighty long day. Forget it forever. Bums my face right off of my face.

You can take US 41 instead of 75, the Galleria is right on 41. image

And I thought New Orleans & Houston was bad!! I came in on I-85 from Montgomery and took 285 cause it was more direct. Next time I'll take 85 on up to 75 and come back down.
The traffic doesn't bother me, it's the SPEED of the traffic; go 100 feet & stop, go 100 feet & stop, go 100 feet stop & pull out cigarette, go 100 feet & stop & light cigarettte, go 100 feet & stop and take a drag. Did that for 10 miles.
Looking for exit 19. Exits go 17, 18, 20, you only see 19 if you're coming the other way. I'm to exit 23 before I decided I aint gonna see no exit 19. Turn around, get some gas while I'm at it, cause I'm on reserve.
People on Georgia don't trust anybody and you have to prepay for your gas before you pump it. But I'm sposed to trust the Osama Bin Laden looking crackhead running the store with my $100 bill while I pump $8 worth of gas.
