How is SEGS for Variety Attribution?--UPDATED with more specific question.
I know folks don't like their grading, but how is their variety attribution? I've got a couple of problem coins I want to send in for variety verification/attribution, but I do not want to use ANACS. And, I an mot a member of NGCs collectors club. I think SEGS has a great holder and I do not plan on selling the coins any time soon. So, that all being the case, how is their variety service? Anyone ever have any problems?
Thanks, Richard.

Excellent.
"1803 Large 8 EF-40"
For the year 1803, there are just three die marriages for the half dimes, two with large 8s and one rare (R6) variety with a small 8. You do not need any special knowledge or even a measuring device to determine the difference; the 8 is either decidedly larger than or smaller than the other date numerals.
This coin was actually the very rare Small 8 variety (LM-1/V3), misattributed by the TPG. Oh yes, it was also no better than a VF-30. I am not complaining, mind you. If they had not totally screwed up the attribution, I might not own this coin today. It was sold on eBay, and apparently everyone looked only at the insert and not the coin.
"Buy the coin and not the holder".
Hey, they got the date right.
But NEVER on a Vam
I bought four Lincoln cents from a dealer guy I know. They are all variations of the no D/weak D 1922. I have one of the coins pinned down as a Die Pair 1. Two pinned down as Die Pair 3. The foourth coin I pinned down as Die Pair 2 (which is the one with the strong reverse, etc.). However, the Die Pair 2 coin has an old cleaning, so I cannot send it to PCGS.
I could send it to ANACS, but I do not like their details grading. SEGS appears to be okay with their problem coin grading. The other three coins are problem free, but since I do not plan on selling in the near future, I just want them in identicle slabs with proper designations.
So, with regards to that, do you think they could correctly label the 3 1922 varieties?
Thanks. Richard.
PS--I only own two SEGS coins right now and both are error coins. I bought them both on eBay.

<< <i>One thing I always look for in 1922 No D cents, Die Pair #2, is the weakness in Lincoln's coat under the 9 in the date. I think either ANACS or SEGS will get this right. This would be a great pick, Rampage! >>
Thanks for the info. I will check out Lincoln's coat later tonight. It has all the other diagnostics (e.g. weak 192, strong 2nd 2, etc.).

remarkable. briggs has to be a top-10 numismatist, & he personally knows just about every other specialist there is. they are light-years ahead of pcgs, & far ahead of ngc & anacs as well.
you can pretty much take a segs attribution to the bank.
