1981 was great year. It was one of the few years that my big brother and I both collected cards. He grew out of it around that time. I collected Topps and Donruss. He collected Topps and Fleer. I remember we both liked the Fisk card and the Bucky Dent card.

I could not for the life of me figure out why my brother called him Bucky F. Dent. I checked his Donruss card, and his name was Russell Earl Dent or something like that. My brother would not tell me where the "F" came from. I guess it was because I was 7. I didn't find out until a coulpe of years later.

My 81's were the best pack I had. Which doesn't say much because all the cards were OC and these 2 stars were actually the best centered. The Baines actually had wax on the front. I use a little different method than Hoof. I use a pair of my fiancees pantyhose and found it does a much better and quicker job than a sock or napkin.

Anyhoo, I am looking forward to both the '75 rip and the next 80's rip. Here are my 81's:

I understand your pain brotha....I really do....

    image

At least some of them had decent centering.

    image

....I really love this set as it was the first set that I had many cards from. My parents bought me decent amounts of this product back when I was 8. image

Well my 1980 pack was the best for me. I got Rod Carew (diamond cut), Tom Seaver, Willie McCovey highlight and Mike Schmidt...........one done and 3 to go - the 75 pack bust, the new 80's pack bust and the hockey pack bust.

Dang it, Arny! I was trying so hard to save this last pack unopened. I've never bought a 1980 pack before this, so it was going to be part of my unopened hoard. Not any more. I'm going to go in to the other room and pull out that Henderson rookie...

  • sorry to hijack the thread again but we need just 4 more takers over on the complete 80's baseball wax bust!!

Promise I won't butt in here againimage
  • I didn't get a Henderson rookie, but I was happy with the selection in the pack. Here's the results:

40 Carlton Fisk (Red Sox C)
    440 Don Sutton (Dodgers P)
    213 Mike Jorgensen (Rangers 1b)
    34 Jeff Newman (A's C)
    691 Ivan DeJesus (Cubs SS)
249 Jim Clancy (Blue Jays P)
    724 Jerry White (Expos OF)
413 Allen Ripley (Red Sox P)
200 Jim Rice (Red Sox DH-OF)
    633 Bob Apodaca (Mets P)
    508 U.L Washington (Royals SS-2b)
    66 Royals Team
    480 Expos Team
    133 Jerry Turner (Padres OF)
119 Sammy Stewart (Orioles P; wax stain on back)

Here's a couple front/back scans of some of the cards:

This was fun! Thanks to all who took the time to share the experience and for putting up scans to share...

Here's my last pack. Not a very good one, but I did get a Tommy Herr rookie. I always liked that guy. I think David Clyde was brought up straight out of high school when he was 18 years old.

My final pack was not too shabby. I pulled two Red Sox HOFers. I also got a Fred Kendall. I must have pulled ten of those in 1980. That was my first year of buying cards. I could get five packs for a dollar at Auman's grocery store. I think I got a Fred Kendall for every buck I spent.

  • Here are the results from my 80 pack. Most cards are slightly off center. About 4 or 5 were decently centered and I scanned three of those and a checklist that is on the other end of the centered scale with just a slight diamond cut.

    Ken Landreaux
    Steve Nicosia
    Rusty Torres
    Randy Jones
    Red Sox Team
    Jim Rooker
    Joey McLaughlin
    Steve Stone
    Joe Cannon
    Craig Swan
    Terry Puhl
plus the four cards that are scanned.
