it's 1277 - which indicates it's Turkey, first year of the Abdul Aziz reign, year nine, but I can't find an exact match in Krause.

What size is it?

It's under the toughra, written in Arabic numbers above the Turkish letter "P" for "para"

Edited to add: The Hejri date is 1286 (1277 +9), which is about 1868 or 1869 AD.

1277 is 1861, plus nine, 1861 being 1

Ajaan,
I believe the picture on the right is the obverse and it's upside down.
The picture on the left is the reverse oriented correctly.

Don, this is one of the most elegant designs that we were discussing with newsman the other day. Very simple, yes of course your tughra needs a 90 degree rotation,it was minted during the still called empire of Ottoman emperor Abdul Aziz. Both Egyptian and Turkish coins of that era fascinate me, especially the large coppers such as yours. I recently got a yr 4 10 para proof , you count the years starting from 1277 (1861) being 1.

I always liked this tidbit :

The "toughra" is a stylized thumbprint. The earlier sultans had a problem with reading and writing and signed their documents with a thumbprint.

Geez, with Arabic script (let alone calligraphy) being what it is, no wonder!

I have an Ottoman gold coin on my Holey Gold Hat that I never bothered to attribute. Carried it to work to show to a Turkish coworker and to my boss, who's from Morocco. Hassan, my boss, pointed out that it had a date on it, which I never noticed before. Of course I would have seen the date and been able to figure that out, at least, had I paid much attention to it. I still don't know if it's Turkish or Egyptian. The Hejira date was something like 1203- early 1800s, as I recall.

I'll scan it one of these days.
