The prices of both $5 gold are reasonable, the obverse isn't as nice as I wish it could be but I like the reverse.
I am not buying any because there are just so many modern commems to keep track of and I want to be selective

I almost bought it because I think it'll hold value well and have a low actual mintage, kinding keeping itself under the radar right now.

But I'm sitting it out because I don't think it's gonna' be one that I like to take out and look at a lot.

As I posted in a previous thread on the same subject,

<< <i>In an article about the SF Old Mint Commems, in the 9/18 issue, CW reports, "Sales of the 2006-S San Francisco Old Mint silver dollars reached 31.7 % of the maximum 500,000 coins authorized, or 158,490 coins. Sales are represented by 39,587 single Uncirculated dollars, 84,229 single Proof dolars and 34,674 additional Proof dollars in the 2006 American Legacy Collection set.
Half eagle sales have reached 41.3% of the maximum 100,000-coin authorization, 42,325 coins, representing 29,255 of the single Proof gold coins and 12,070 of the single Uncircualted coins." >>

For design, I like the reverses a lot. Obverses are just OK.

    Prices seem fair to me.

I ordered one of each of the silver dollars and passed on the gold.

Eventually I want to put the silver dollars into a multiholder with one or two original 1906-S coins. Probably a Barber dime and half.

I will order the proof so that I can see the classic reverse on a proof coin that I can actually afford. I have the ms version already on a classic liberty gold.

I ordered one each of the silvers and passed on the gold, although I might pick one up later.

I'll probably flip them over in their cases to have the reverses showing image

I guess the so-called artists at the mint aren't talented enough to come up with a reverse design of their own. image The obverse is ok, but I suspect we'll see a straight-on view rather than the 3/4 view of the building.

We get a straight on view on the half eagle, but the 3/4 view is the mandated design for the dollar.

I think the gold is way overpriced so I cancelled my order.

I believe if you send in your SF Old Mint coins within 30 days after their first shipped date, PCGS will give them FS designation

When I checked Numismatic News' website on Sept. 30 - they said the Proofs were at 34,754 and the Uncs at 14,899 out of a total maximum mintage of 100,000 across both types.

Thanks for the info! Guess I should subscribe to one of these good resources myself...

No need to subscribe - I just went to their website (Numismatic News) , wait for it to load, click on "News" at the top under their banner, and find a news article that relates to orders, mintages, etc... such as "Anniversary Set Numbers Move Backwards", up pops an interesting article and informative table.

My shipping date has moved from 12/15 to 10/22 on my orders for the San fran commems.
The only one that remained 12/15 was the proof $5 version.
    Anyone else notice this?
  • Options
Yes, caught that this morning by chance when I logged onto the Mint's site. Also, Numismatic News' website reports the following sales figures: $1 (proof and unc) at about 164,000. Add the approx. 50,000 Legacy Sets and I would say they are at about 40% of their max. mintage. The $5 gold (which I chose not to buy) is at about 50,000 for proof and unc combined, about 50% of max. mintage. Perhaps the $5 unc piece is still a good deal with only about 15,000 sold so far, but I don't know.
