    "Dear sir,

    You are correct, it's not a copy, just a counterfeit/fake and should be listed as such."

    I believe he is right that the coin does not need to be stamped as a copy because no pieces were produced of that date. Technically, it's a "fantasy strike".

    However, he is dead wrong about there having been no "intent to decieve".

    I think his crazy logic tells him that the 1870-S trade dollar was never officially produced, therefore there is no need for "Copy" since there is no original...

    However, coinfacts shows approximately 10 known, so who knows if it needs it or not.

    At least he cares about the "integrity and artistry of the piece" image

    You're thinking of 1870-S Seated Dollars, not Trade Dollars. The latter weren't made until 1873, of course.

    He's saying that this coin isn't a "copy" because there were no real 1870-S Trade Dollars to "copy." And therefore it doesn't need to have "COPY" stamped on it.

    He just might be right about his statement that the Hobby Protection Act might not apply because there never was any such coin, but if that is true the piece is still illegal under US code Title 18 Sec 489. That section make illegal possession with intent to sell of any "token, disk, or device in the likeness or similitude as to design, color, or the inscription thereof of any of the coins of the United States or of any foreign country issued as money either under the authority of the United States or under the authority of any foreign government. . . "

    Even though no 1870-S trade dollars were ever struck, it would still qualify under the similitude description which means that it doesn't have to be an exact copy, "close" is good enough to make it illegal.

    He doesn't show the reverse because the reverse is probably blank. Will be interesting to see.

    P. S. I reported an eBay seller yesterday who had for sale 3 counterfeit Seated dollars and a counterfeit 1885 Trade dollar. He said "I don't know that they're counterfeit." So I told him how to tell and he didn't reply. So I notified eBay and his items are now all gone! image
