    The five in the date looks smaller than the other numbers.

    Also, is that a little "blob" of material on the lower left part of the "B"?

    Yup - and a crowded CC. I was looking at a VAM website and full picture of the coin in this one isn't too far off as far as the 5 and CC go.

    Nice fake. The obverse has the look of a 1921 Morgan.

    Heavily tooled date and MM produced from a 1921 coin. Someone should report it to Ebay as a counterfeit.

    Incedently, the 1885-CC is one of the rarest dates in heavily circulated condition.

    Yes, it looked fake to me too. But it looks good enough to fool someone who hasn't ever seen a genuine 1885-CC. image

    The coin looks like a counterfeit to me.

    Beyond that the 1885-CC Morgan is VERY SCARCE in circulated condition. I learned that first hand when a collector had me build a circulated set of Morgan Dollars for him. If you look at the Gray Sheet, you will see that the prices hardly drop off for the 1885-CC Morgan in the circulated grades. There is that there are hardly any coins available. As such this could is "a rarity" in used condition.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I agree with what Bill Jones said. I think the toughest Morgans in circulated condition are 1895, 1903-O, 1885-CC and 1898-O.

    The coin screams "fake" to even those of us who don't collect Morgans and don't know the diagnostics for genuine coins. I guess after looking at so many counterfeit trade dollars, there's a certain "look" to fake coins of any series.

    The coin is a 1921. Reverse lettering is that of the 1921, as well as the chin, hair, eagle, etc.

    Same type of counterfeit that was very rampant earlier this summer. Links earlier this year in June on this coin and other Morgan counterfeits with the same general appearance was here:

    The 1885-CC in the earlier thread also had the small 'CC' reverse, which I asked if anyone had ever seen on a genuine 1885-CC. Never got a definative response to that question, but I know I've never seen a micro CC on an 1885-CC Morgan.
