The 2001 buffalo silver dollars (proof and uncirculated) are surging in price.

The 2001 buffalo silver dollars in the raw non-rarified condition are currently surging in price.

I am seeing price increases of around 33% in the last two months alone.

Is this a temporary phenomenon due to the early interest shown in the buffalo gold coins?

Discussion?

I too noticed a higher price range for these coins at a coin show yesterday - plus more prominent displays than earlier. Could be related to the gold buffalo... Cheers, RickO
  • I think that many who have them would like to make graded sets of the Silver and Gold together...I think the Buffalo's would make a beautiful set together along with an original Bufflao Nickel....what a sight!

You seem to have the makings of a nice Coin Display going. Leave room for next years Platinum Buffalos, also.

Silver and Gold always look good together side by side.

  • I recently sold the Proof and MS coins for $300 and $230 respectively.......they were the signed versions.

  • I sold a raw PR/MS set last month for $400, which was a surprise.

I guess folks need the silver and gold versions now.

I picked up a set of the Proof and MS version in original mint packaging for $145 a year or so ago. So I've got potential for profit? Sweet.

Barndog: You picked up both pieces for $145 combined a year or so ago? That was an incredible price. I do not recall those prices except for a short time in 2002 for the uncirculated coin.

I was surprised at the price too. It was via a mail bid sale from American Coin and Stamp Brokerage. I was bidding on a couple half dimes and just threw that bid in for grins. I was surprised I won it for so little. With a mail bid sale listing many hundreds (thousands?) of items, you never know what's going to happen.

I have all three versions, silver proof, gold proof and a toned 1934 nickle. However, I perfer to keep them as they are and not in slabs.

Dude what's on that Gold Buffalo ?? Around the feathers. Hope thats just the plastic.

  • Just noticed that myself. With a mintage of 500k, I think this might bode well for the SAE anniversary sets. Probably quite a few more SAE collectors than modern commem collectors and they'll NEED those reverse proofs and "W" mintmarks.

Interestingly, I always felt the silver ones were close, but not quite - due to poor execution of the models. I am pleased to note the gold Buff is MUCH better and does justice to Fraser's 1912 creation, and I'm happy to have one to look at.

Like Dude, this is like what it is Dude.

The surface texture in the fields around the Indian Head and Bison devices reproduces the finish Fraser included on his original designs for the coin and and also found on the original 1913 coin. A very groovy coin indeed Dude.

  • I thought the "poor execution" of the Ag Buff was due to the fact that the design was intended for a nickel, and it just didn't scale well...

Wow!. I paid $191.00 for a PR/MS set in the immediate after-market in Nov. 2001. I'm still kicking myself in the butt for waiting to order because I wanted to spread out the $4.95 shipping charges over a larger order. image I paid another $151.00 for the Coin & Currency set from the same online dealer. Nice to learn it's appreciating. image

No Fountainhead, the design looks superb at any size, if they don't distort the model with poor execution. A circle is a circle is a circle.

On the silver buff, the buffalo has had some height chopped off him at the expense of his legs. Squishy. As if to compensate for this, the Indian on the obverse has seen time in a stretch rack, elongating his neck.

Thankfully, with the gold execution, they've done an excellent homage to the original.

More evidence of lack of attention to detail on the Ag example is the size and shape of "LIBERTY" in relation to the Indian's profile. That thing is full of gaffes - even though I liked the notion of it at the time, the execution turned me off. Good thing smoeone knew what they were doing on the gold example.

The price surge for the 2001 BUFFALOS IS MORE DRAMATIC IN tHE NGCs. On July 30th ,the NGC 2001 Buffalo PRF 70 was 500.00..Last couple weeks the price has been 1025.00 - 1325.00 . Only 1 , 300 silver PRF 70 in Both PCGS and NGC
Almost like trading the commodity futures markets. This bodes well for both the PCGS and the NGC Gold Buffalos especially in PRF 70.

This would be my guess as well.

It seems clear that the Buffalo silver dollar is mostly insensitive to the bullion price of silver whether up or down.

Nice coins. Only complaint I would have is with the gold buffalo. Put the mint mark on the reverse, where it belongs.
