Ok, I think I lied in the "favorite 80's set" thread when I said the 82's were my favorite. I really love the 1984s. I remember getting two vending boxes from Renata Galasso back when I was in fourth grade. 1000 cards all at once. Wow. That was awesome! The All-Star cards are a fantastic design, too.

James I have not been posting my packs much since I have been the king of commons...
Here are my 84s. I really like this set, but my pack wasn't too hot. All the cards were O/C to the bottom. NO big names in the hobby, but a couple of stars from the era.
1. Bruce Sutter was the man in the early 1980's...but the tight powder blue uni might not be his best look. 2. I loved Dan Quisenberry when I was a kid. I remember him being on The Baseball Bunch and This Week in Baseball all the time. I loved it when he would hose down the fans in the KC bleachers on hot days. 3. Doesn't he just *look* like a pitcher? He's like a statue out there. 4. My grandmother once told me that I should buy all the Dravecky cards I could find. She became a huge fan during his comeback from his broken arm.
My bad streak hasnt ended.... 1984 Topps 17 John Denny 57 dan Schatzeder 112 Tom Niedenfuer 128 Rick Manning 159 Darryl Cias 232 Tim Wallach 238 Reid Nichols 304 Warren Brusstar 330 John Candelaria 403 Lloyd Moseby AS 541 Dennis Lamp "I love lamp!" 589 Mike Easler 685 Willie Aikens 712 AL Active Career Home Run Ldrs-Reggie, Nettles, Luzinski 784 Leon Roberts

the 83's were very nostalgic most cards were oc top to bottom. mike marshall was next to broken gum and had corner ding. a few other soft corners. the wrapper had a small rip in it to begin with. i think the ron jackson looks pretty good.
bring on the 82's! who's gonna pull that hrbek rookie?
1983. What was I doing when these Topps cards were issued?? I had graduated college (Colorardo State U.) in Dec. of '82, was working as a cook in a Ft. Collins restaurant, and was raising a family with two kids. Dirt poor and a negative cash flow. I'm amazed I have as many '83 Topps cards in my collection as I do now that I think about it!
Here are the cards from my pack:
536 Johnny Wockenfuss (Tigers) 41 Jerry Turner (Tigers) 18 Super Veteran - Kent Tekulve (Pirates) 367 Bud Anderson (Indians) 508 Tom Filer (Cubs) 79 Mick Kelleher (Angels) 437 Rick Sweet (Mariners) 490 Jim Palmer (Orioles) 25 Hal McRae (Royals) 521 Bruce Benedict (Braves) 547 Geoff Zahn (Angels) 214 Jerry White (Expos) 223 John Montefusco (Padres) 385 Mike Easler (Pirates) 286 Rick Langford (Athletics; ST)
I am a week behind, so I need to catch up a little. Lots of "stuff" preoccupying my time the last few weeks. Anyway, here is a list of the 84's that I should have listed last week:
Alan Tammell, Bud Black, Marvell Wynne, Jim Rice, Steve Sax, Craig Swan, Bobby Mitchell, Mike Armstrong, Mike Witt, Dan Spillner, Marty Barrett, Ricky Adams, Quisenberry Highlight, Manager Bob Lillis, and Bill Campbell.
The Wynne, Witt, Battett, and Adams cards were nicely centered. The rest were off center.
Fom 1983, I got the following:
Sparky Lyle, Bob Clard, Manager Russ Nixon, Manager Joe Torre, Tom O'Malley, Aurelio Rodriguez, Checklist 661 to 792, Kirk Gibson, Kent Hrbeck, Cal Ripken, Rick Manning, Kevin Saucier, Buck Martinez, Gary Carter A.S., and Bruce Bochte
The Hrbek and Ripken cards are off center. The Lyle and Martinez cards have decent centering. The Martinez card also seems to have borders that are just a little brighter and whiter.

1983 was the first year that I actually bought packs. I was 6 years old and somehow that made me old enough to ride my bike to town(about 1/2 a mile) with my friends to Lindemann's, the local pharmacy and ice cream shop. I used to ride there and get a pack of cards, a big apple Jolly Rancher and then sit at the soda counter and have a Green River and beg for "extra syrup." Between the Green River and the Apple Jolly Rancher, my tounge was green for 3 days.
eidted to add: My favorite to cards at the time were Pete Rose and Rod Carew. My grandfater used to look over the cards with me. He said Pete Rose played the game how it was supposed to be player. "As hard as you can." And Rod Carew "was the best hitter since Ted Williams." I don't know now if either of those are completely accurate, but grandpa told me that when I was 6 so I thought it had to be true.
I think you're damn lucky to have had a grandfather around -- and willing! -- to share his opinions on baseball with you. Neither of mine were into sports. My Dad was too busy raising five boys to spend much time with us, but the memories of just playing catch with him are priceless.
the next year is 1982 topps, im going to be asking pretty pretty please for everyones centered 1982 topps commons to try and upgrade my set. let me know!!
1. Keith Hernandez: one of the brightest baseball players of the last couple decades. His book is a great read and shows you just how intricate baseball really is. 2. Another Tony Armas card. That's at least three during these pack breaks for mem 3. Carl Yerstrewskmsker: How much does the "then" picture look like the "now" picture? 4. Chili Davis: Put up a series of great seasons with the bat from ages 31-37, including OPS+ of 141, 129, 147, 145, 124 and 130. 5. Bobby Grich: A great and very underratedplayer for the Angels in the 80's. 6. Rod Carew: Another of the nicely designed 1983 All-Star set. Too bad this one has a big chunk out of the bottom edge. Oh, he's also mentioned in an Adam Sandler song.

The Wynne, Witt, Battett, and Adams cards were nicely centered. The rest were off center.

The Hrbek and Ripken cards are off center. The Lyle and Martinez cards have decent centering. The Martinez card also seems to have borders that are just a little brighter and whiter.

<< <i>1983. >>
My Auctions
I think you're damn lucky to have had a grandfather around -- and willing! -- to share his opinions on baseball with you. Neither of mine were into sports. My Dad was too busy raising five boys to spend much time with us, but the memories of just playing catch with him are priceless.
Thanks for sharing!

1. Keith Hernandez: one of the brightest baseball players of the last couple decades. His book is a great read and shows you just how intricate baseball really is.
2. Another Tony Armas card. That's at least three during these pack breaks for mem
