My New Indian
Hey All
I am pretty new to the boards and to serious coin collecting. I collect PCGS slabbed Roosevelt dimes, raw Indian Heads and am working on a raw U.S. basic type set.
I just bought an Indian for my type set and was wondering if you all could share your opinions about the grade. I am studying real hard to hone my grading skills, but would like some input from other more experienced collectors.
Thanks
Mike

- Russ if you would be so inclined, what do you mean by funky? I am still learning.
Thanks

It looks too pale for a copper IHC. Looks like it may have been cleaned.

I'm (obviously) not Russ and I can't speak for him but I'll add that it looks a little overexposed which could dramatically change the tone of the coin. Nice coin though!

Are there any other ways to tell if the coin has been cleaned? This is the first coin I bought raw on the net; I don’t even have it in hand yet. I have seen some blatant cleaning jobs that look like crap. I never would have guessed this one could have been cleaned, the surfaces and color are very even in tone. I guess this naive country boy better wise up fast.
Thanks

If it was an abrasive cleaning it will have tiny little hairlines all over it, or perhaps "swirls". If a chemical cleaning, the color will be the tell.
PS: Yeah, it could also just be a crappy pic. Copper is tough to image and get the color correct.

<< <i>It looks like the white balance on the sellers pics. Could you image it again once you have it and let us know your impressions of the coin? >>
I finally have my new IHC in hand and the pictures do not do this coin justice. I think the white balance was way off and washed the color out. The coin is a darker chocolate brown and the areas in the feilds that look washy are bits of red mint luster peeking through. As a collector who likes brown copper I am happy with the coin.
I hope to get some of my own pics of the coin soon, but I am still learning how to take coin pics.
Thanks

Does anyone have a pic of some copper that has been know to be retoned using a darkener they can post for comparison?
I am going to a coin show in the morning that I have been looking forward to for a while and now I am getting a little coinshy.
