I would think that the spillover from the 3 coin sets would sell out the gold-silver sets today, 20k isn't many. Also you could buy 3 of these sets and have change left over vs the cost of the 3 coin set.

I didn't order the 3 piece gold yesterday, but just got on the "wait list". I suspect there will be a number of expired credit cards to help out along the way...

Now I am regretting just getting one gold set. I just in another order in case I can get one on the backend of the offering, assuming people may drop out.

    Can't hurt I figure!

In addition to expired/invalid cards will be cards without sufficient credit limit remaining. I need to call and up mine now!

Don't think I got the 3 piece gold in time but I am on the waiting list early on so maybe with some luck. I did buy two of the gol/silver and 5 of the silver 3 piece sets though. What is the worst that can happned you break even? On the plus side these have some potential to go through the roof.

There will be 30,000 uncirculated gold coins with the special mintmark and burnished surfaces. How does this compare with the production numbers for the uncirculated bullion AE gold coins?

Just fore fun, I decide to order another 3-piece gold set. My confirmation indicates it is backordered until 10/6/06. We will see.

I just ordered 2 a bit ago and got the email with BACKORDERED.

I called the mint and spoke with a woman that says they are NOT sold out. I explained that it reads Backordered and she again stated that they are not sold out.

    who knows.

if they aren't, they will be.

Hmm, did you know the US Mint gives the person who orders that last available coin a special commendation???

Lucky me! It'll be interesting to see if I made the cutoff. If I did, great I get the sets. Of course, then I have to come up with the $10K to cover it. image

Actually, I decided to order 4 because I'm hoping I can sell 3 of them to pay for the fourth...

I'm more optomistic. I would say sell two to pay for all four.

This just means that there are WAY too many people who have WAY too much money. I bought what I could afford of the silver sets. 2. Heck, I could not even afford that, but hope I can turn one of the sets for enough to nearly pay for the set I keep.

A friend of mine just ordered 4 sets and it says backordered. So I called the mint and a woman told me they were NOT sold out. Go figure.

Either way it's interesting so many think this will be a rare issue. 10,000 perfect, MS69-70 copies should be enough to satisfy the masses, no?
  • Options
It says they have taken orders to fill the 10,000 limit...but they are still taking orders for those who still want them and they would be filled if any cancelled or their credit cards were out of date...So they have sold the max!

I talked to a supervisor and she said they were indeed sold out. Like anywhere, I'm sure it depends on who you talk to.

    The Mint is clear.

    "
Orders have been taken that meet the maximum mintage level of 10,000 for the American Eagle 20th Anniversary Gold Coin Set. We will continue to accept orders in the event cancellations occur.
    "

They wouldn't post this if they had 5000 left.

I'll go against the grain and say yes it should be enough.

I am certain speculators and dealers bought as many as they could in hopes of big rips on eBay.

Once the frenzy dies off there should trade closer to bullion.

I don't follow the prices of the proof gold eagles. Do proof eagles trade close to the price of the bullion gold eagles? It looks like, from the PCGS pricing guide (I know image), the proof have about a 25% premium over the regular strike eagles.

Closer to bullion? The three coin set is cheaper than buying individual proofs as it is. ($885 - 2006 1 oz Gold Proof) I think these will stay a ways ahead of bullion for a while.

Well there are now 3 or 4 different auctions forf the 3 piece gold set on ebay.

From a low of $3,100 to a high of $5600 Lord I hope they sell. Then I can turn my extra.

Did you ask her why the Website says they DID met the 10K mark??

My experience is that those workers don't know much. If they can put an order in, it's not sold out.

    AGAIN, the website states:

" Orders have been taken that meet the maximum mintage level of 10,000 for the American Eagle 20th Anniversary Gold Coin Set. We will continue to accept orders in the event cancellations occur.
    "

If she said they were sold out, then why would you place an order???. They need enough 'cushion' for cancellations. Don't get me wrong, I hope you get yours, I just don't think it's 100%.

I think the tele-sales are outsourced, I wouldnt put to much hope in what they say. I would believe the Mints website for what it is worth.

yeah, you can still order the through the website too but only as a "wait lister" so to speak.

only the people who ordered before the 10,000 limit are guaranteed to get one. the founding fathers were the same way. some people slid through and got some, most had to go to ebay.

Just placed another order for the gold-silver sets with no problem. These 20k sets must be close to a sellout.

Don't know what to say, she the took my order, and gave me a confirmation number. Maybe it was a shift change when I called. Guess I'll find out in October.

There were quite a few dissapointed souls who had confirmation numbers on the Ben Franklins, only to learn later taht they were too late.

I ordered 3 before the note was posted, but I am keeping fingers crossed until they show up.

I just now placed my order for the Silver 3-Coin Set and the Silver/Gold 2-coin set. They both say backordered with the silver set shipping 08-Dec-2006 and the silver/gold set shipping 06-Oct-2006. I think that in the future I may wind up having paid way too much for the silver set, but I think the silver/gold combo is actually a pretty good price. Even if I could still order the gold set I'd think that it was a bit too pricey. A grand is about the limit of what I can spend once every few months.

My order for the 3 coin gold set went through at 9:15 this morning, and I'm almost positive the sell out notice hadn't been posted yet. But, from when I placed it, till now, it says my order is on hold. Anybody else? Does anyone know when the mint posted the notice?

The mint is just gathering imfomation by letting people keep ordering

I think the worst part is having to wait until December to get my Silver Set and October to get my Gold/Silver combo. image

My order confirmed from YESTERDAY at 12:30 shows on hold so I wouldn't be too concerned however
it is possible they will lower the maximum limit from 10 to say 3 per household. That would be a pi**er!!

Ordered 1 gold set at 12:30 today, then I see this thread. I can only hope I guess. I picked a fine time to build a courttyardimage Figured they last a couple days at least..

Do you think they would actually lower the limit to less than 10? Has the mint ever done anything like that before?
  • Options
    BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
No and I don't think they could legally do that after taking orders. They could lower the limit on future orders but not ones already taken.

Actually I believe they did this with the Buffalo silver dollar. Seems like they cut limit rather dramaticly on the coin and currency sets AFTER accepting orders.

Now, slab them or keep them raw?
