My New Die Cracked Buffalo :D

Let's talk about coins! Is that okay?
Here's my new buffalo I won off eBay. Seller's pictures. It's a 1913D Type 1, I needed it for my Date/MM set, but there's another reason I wanted it.

Feel free to assign a grade.
And can anyone guess why I wanted it?
Thanks,
Amanda
EDITED- Because StrikeOut guessed it.

<< <i>Is that a die crack running through the "Five Cents"?? >>
Why yes, yes it is.

<< <i>Filled D? >>
It could be, but Strikeout is correct that I wanted it for the diecrack.

Great eye - was that noted on the eBay page, or you just spotted that by looking?
I would have probably missed it the first dozen times I looked at the graphic if you hadn't mentioned something was different about it.

The crack was mentioned in the listing but the fact that it was a buffalo nickel was omitted, for some reason.

<< <i>That Buff has a lot of character with the die crack and the filled "D". I think you are right with 35, shot at 40. >>
Thanks.

I don't recall seeing a die crack running through FIVE CENTS before. Very, very interesting.
FYI: this coin looks easily AU50. Amanda, I'm surprised you think it's VF35.
Oh, and a filled D is pretty common on Type 1's as well as 1929-D.

AU50? I didn't think it had quite enough lustre for that. I love that reverse die crack.
Thanks!

You'd be surprised just how little luster this date/mm has even in mint state. Take a look in Heritage's Auction Archives and compare your coin to other XF and AU coins of this date. I'm certain you'll quickly realize what a nice coin you have.
And if you've not signed up with Heritage, shame on you.

I have a Heritage account.
I paid VF money for it. The auction said it was VF.
I'll go do some research.

I dunno. It was a poorly worded auction. Here.

'Market Acceptible' what a term...

One of my better Buffs.
I thought all type ones were super strikes. Does that perhaps date this coin to a very late type one?

Despite what Lange states, it's my belief that the Denver issues are not as well struck as those from the East coast. The San Francisco issues are the least well struck.
Without a closeup inspection, it's tough to say if this is a late die state. I suspect it's not.
The central detail on this piece suggests a good strike.

I only own one buffalo, 1936 MS66. Your coin has character and I agree it should be AU50. Even if the back leg is struck weakly. I like it and if you paid VF money for it, you got a nice gift. I love those poorly worded auctions. I got a nice Columbian Expo half because the auction title was Combumbian Expostion.
Keep up finding those poorly worded auctions. They can be the source of many great coins.

I feel this coin is AU50. The 13-D Type 1 is sharply struck coin, and it's 58 only if the wear is barely discernible. The rub here is fairly substantial, but not so heavy on the hip and flank as to plummet it to XF45 in my opinion. If a grader were to lean toward 45 based purely on wear, I think the nice features elsewhere would encourage him to go AU50.
Nice coin, Amanda. When you browse past and current auctions at Heritage, let me know a case where horn-rule does not apply...
Guy
Here's one that looks very much like mine.
Except for the cool die crack.
